Is getting recon a pain?
Just wondering if getting recon is a pita? I would like to lower my yaris, probably TRD or NF210. I notice some of the Hawaii yaris pics that car is lower but I don't see recon sticker. Is recon not needed for suspension drop?
Thanks for any input |

I think you can go without recon I haven't been pulled over for it yet on my df210

Recon is needed whenever you have a drop, but it's up to you if you want recon or not.
The first thing to do is schedule an appointment, and whenever the car is dropped, check the height of your license plates. Front has to be at least 12" off the ground and back is 24" I think.... Also if you have fog lights and you drop the car, the fog lights have to be off the car for recon, but you can just put it back on after (don't tell the recon guy you putting it back). |

808_Yaris just gave you great information.
However, I believe you have nothing to worry about. Those drop springs won't drop you down enough to give you any problems from the cops. I am dropped on coilovers which drop it more than those drop springs, and I am not worried about being pulled over for my drop at all! Most cars come lower these days anyways. You can get BMWs with sport packages that have a lower stance than their other cars. If a cop REALLLLLLLY wanted to be a jerk, he could bust you for that MILD drop. Only if he knew how high they came stock, he won't even know the difference. I give it a 1 out of 1000 chance you'd get busted for that drop. Which areas do you usually drive your car in? I wouldn't worry about any place besides waikiki, and even that is a longshot for just that drop. |

Recon is needed for ANY frame modifications, ANY Modification to the engine that increases the amount of Cylinder it has, and ANY suspension mods INCLUDING BRACES!
So for those who decide to get a JDM body kit and get a Short bumper brace, you need recon.....well your supposed to have but since you really can't see it they wont hold you to it. With one of the springs you mention expecially with the TRD one you can just say it came factory like that and that it is a Toyota Genuine spring. It's stock height. The only problem is if the car is too stiff then you wont get safety check. The fog lights wont be a problem. They'll give you recon even with foglights on as long as they aren't HID fogs. If they are take em off. Just tell them fogs come stock. liscense plate is not a recon requirement anymore but its law that u have to have it over 10" from the ground |

Thanks for the info.
Not worried too much about cops. I just hate having to drive out of my way for safety inspections. So if I do get recon. I should get the springs and alignment done, then schedule recon within 30 days, is this correct? |

DUDE! Don't get recon no need. With one of those springs you'll get safety easy trust me. I could have got safety with my df210 but my tint didn't pass...

Ok for this mainlander, what is a recon? If you never modify your car, do you have to recon on a periodic basis like a smog check here in California?

Recon is just a permit to have a RECONSTRUCTED CAR. It's lame. I rather have Smog Check.
You need recon for basically framework, suspensions, and overhauls. I think you need recon to have a Salvage titled car back on the road too. Anything that has to mess aroun with the original frame of the car.

Yeah it's similar to a smog check. In Hawaii, if you modify you car in any way, you need to get recon. Once they inspect the car and give you your recon sticker, the sticker is permanent and you don't have to go back unless you modify more parts of your car. But people go get recon for mild mods, get the sticker, then modify their car. Most people in Hawaii don't have recon because of the hassle of going to the only recon station and getting their car approved.

That sounds easy but I think most of my engine mods would have to come off if I were to pass smog at a legit place. Intake, S/C, header all do not have the CARB sticker that says they are California Air Resources Board certified.

Recon is a bitch though you get caught without recon your paying 270 outta your pocket to the state. Second time around is a 1000 fine.
