2009 Yaris and wind sailing - Toyota Yaris Forums

Just joined the site and purchased a 2009 3 door HB yaris in December of 2012. I have noticed that the Yaris really gets pushed around by the wind once I have reached about 50-60mph. Besides looking like I am a drunk driver, it is also very annoying on long trips. Has there been any suspension modifications that have successfully been performed on the Yaris in order to track straighter on the windy roads? Thanks Yaris World!

Cool GrayYaris and I'm thinking of doing the same for mine as well. It seems that's the thing to do with this type of car. But living here florida, rain sits on the road to long!

lower your car , get a wider tire .. this will help
but the yaris is a light weight car so i don't think that this problem will be fixed by 100%

It kinda annoys me too while driving on a highway but i got used to it

Me neither lol. Good catch. The suspension mod I was thinking of was sway bar links. I don't think I will invest the time or money in lowering the car. Anyone had luck with different sway bar links?

TRD or UltraRacing Rear Sway Bar is the cheapest and easiest first step towards mitigating the effects of wind buffeting. When I put mine on, the first impression I got was that the car felt heavier in the way it sat on the road.

Thanks WeeYari. I was just looking at some rear sway bars. I think I will pick one up in a few months and report back. Where is the cheapest place to pick one up?

The rear sway bar definitely makes a huge difference. On my blue 09 I have a sway bar and run 205s for tires. It is really solid in heavy winds. On my red 08 I don't have a sway bar and run 195s and still gets pushed around, so I would say that the sway bar helps more than the tire width does.

From a lot of experimentation, I would say that tyre tread pattern helps more than tyre width AND the sway bar.

Yeah I have like 7-8/32's left on my tires so I won't be trying that one for 50,000 miles

altho it still feels like having a rear sway bar would be worth it tho.

If you can get garm at micro image to reply to you.. I think he's still got the whiteline for pretty cheap. like $100 less than the whiteline site
currently using 215/35/18

Thanks for giving me Garm's name but it turns out this thread is a duplicate (stupid me) so I had found his name yesterday elsewhere on YW. I did talk to Garm yesterday on the phone. I gotta say that guy is awesome. I am going to wait until he gets the 19mm bar in and pick that up for around $145 shipped. I don't think I will be lowering my yaris but I will consider wider tires in a few years when I need them.

Being a used yaris...have the alignment checked/verified...possibly add a tad of toe in

My 16 year old daughter is learing how to drive. The other day she asked why the wind was pushing the car around. I don't drive that car often, but it must be pretty bad if a new driver that's oblivious to most everything going on around her can notice that.

The Yaris is a lightweight car comparatively to others so it's very noticeable. The rear sway bar helps quite a bit. I was thinking of getting wider wheels, along with new rims to help. Not sure if I want to lower the car - that'd be in the future if anything.
