Tuned a DBW Toyota yesterday
For a bit now I've been preaching about mods on the DBW Toyota's. Yesterday I witnessed the BS first hand. I tuned a 07 Matrix XR with a SRI, cat-back and AEM wideband. We went out for a quick ride to just monitor what was happening and I told him to turn around immediately. As soon as you put the motor under load it would damn near hit 17:1 AF!!!! This is VERY dangerous!!!
We installed a Emanage Blue and tuned the car for an hour or so. After ironing out the cruise AF's and then the WOT AF's to 12.5:1 the car ran VERY smooth and had excellent pickup! We then went a step further and tuned timing a lil bit and gained a bit more pickup in the mid and top end. I highly recommend anyone with a DBW Toyota and mods to get a wideband and check it out. I havent heard of anyone on here yet with mods AND a wideband so I'm VERY interested to see if it relates to the Yaris. I dont see why it wouldnt..... |

I only have a basic narrowband A/F meter but find it most useful, even with the basic intake and exhaust mods on my car everything seems kosher, when the car's under heavy load it does start to run very rich, I've seen it pegged at about 11:1 sometimes, but otherwise it just oscillates around 14.7:1 as it should.
What I find strange, though, is that according to all the technical manuals I've looked though, the ECU should be able to adapt, using the two sensors before and after the first catalyser. It should be able to adjust the fuelling so as the remain at a stoichiometric average... The self-learning and self-diagnosis functions are really quite complex, which is why it's often difficult for people to tune our little engines outside of factory spec. Maybe it's different on the Matrix's ECU, I'm really not sure. But yeah, having a more accurate way of controlling the AF ratio through an e-manage is certainly a preferable option

I'm really curious to see one with a wideband and see if its all dbw toyo's or just the Matrix's. A narrowband O2 sensor is only accurate around the stoich area and it reacts VERY slow.
I saw a XA with a TRD CAI and it snaked around all over, then I saw one with a AEM I believe it was. The AEM was more direct to cold air, I'm curious if the pipe length makes a difference too. The toyo ecu can relearn in a way BUT its working off of the narrowband sensor and trying to hit 12:1 accurately. Needless to say its not going to be on because anything over 13.5 or so is going to look very rich with that o2 sensor. ALSO, I've heard of people's stories where it learns around the emanage eventually and goes lean again, a quick reset fixes this but I'm curious to see how this kids car holds up over time. I will keep everyone posted :) |

Please do, thanks :)
One in the exhaust tip?? It should be pretty close anyway, enough to tell if its way lean. You have a CAI or SRI? |

something like this for the wideband I have a CAI, I should have the SRI by the time of the tune though

Thats what he used, yes. I've used the PLX ones as well, they work nice if you dont want to add another bung. It has a narrowband output ;)

I am pretty handy with a drill and a welder, so I think I can handle installing a bung....

drive by wire
vs having a throttle cable... the throttle on the yaris is electronically controlled
