Uh oh another engine bay rattle....
07' yaris HB
91k miles Auto. Few weeks prior noted low rattle noise while in all gears. A week ago, went on road trip before coming home noticed coolant was slightly below low level. (I dont know if this is coincidence or I just havnt looked at the coolant in a while). Bought new pink coolant and carried on my way.... 9 hour trip through mountains(not the easiest trip) later.... my 'rattle' has gotten much louder and worse. My engine has the normal ticking noise but this rattle is on top of it and appears in all gears (P-N-D-R). Not loud upon startup but when engine is warm it is loud. It seems to be coming from the left side of engine or possibly from within the engine... too loud to tell. The belts look fine and nothing appears to be wobbly in the pully system. Coolant level is right where it was before I came home from the trip. Any thoughts? Im bummed because I just treated my yaris to a nice set of tanabe coilovers and now it goes haywire on me.

You're not giving much information. The source could be anything. The easiest thing to do is look for something loose or a missing screw that holds something down. The sound of the rattle can tell you if it's solid metal, sheet metal, solid plastic or metal to plastic. You need to do some detective work.

I'm currently having the same experience. Any member here got the solution to get rid of that annoying rattle noise?

OP's issue sounds like a failing water pump.

Actually, it is possible that a failing water pump noise would go away as the coolant heats up. This is what happened with mine back in 2008.
As long as you can reproduce the noise, it shouldn't be very hard to locate. |

I looked hard and long at the water pump and saw nothing wrong. It was a good thought though.

I would take it to a trusted garage. Troubleshooting something we can't hear or see is just dart throwing.

I had a horrible rattle once, turned out my hood prop hadn't been put back in it's resting place by the shop.

Ah, This is very late but ended up being a bad water pump bearing that was rattling around.

100,000km or 60,000miles, replace the water pump don't wait in any 4 cylinder cars as a rule of thumb. If you have a car with a timing belt well you do both at the same mileage. Trying to inspect a water pump just visual just doesn't cut it. Removing the belt and verifying the bearing by rotating the pulley and also a side motion. As well by experience, sometimes the weep hole is starting to leak but not enough to drip on the ground. You'll be able to see prestone stains on the pump housing.

Cant say this being a benefit but the water pumps on yaris usually dont explode they give u a warring lol...bearing goes ( noise) and time to replace may also see a small leak but at least ull know something is up.

Almost forgot this thread. So it happens that the loud rattle was actually coming from the clutch assembly.
My other friend got the same rattle noise sound and he decided to bring the car to the toyota mechanic, what they did was they inserted a device to actually hear where the noise is coming from. The mechanic ask to step on the clutch and there the rattle stopped. My friend called me that day and asked me to try to step on the clutch if that rattle might stop, and it did. My friend decided to replace the whole clutch assembly just to make it sure, and his car is already 4 years now with 50k kms mileage. Here are the parts that was replaced. image a.jpeg image b.jpeg image c.jpeg |

If you get a noise in the engine press the clutch with the car standing still in neutral and see if it goes away. If so theres your problem. Should be SOP for diagnosing noises...
