Even without the 4WD in the US, my '08 Hatchback 5MT still loves dirt roads

Had an adventure up American Fork Canyon in Utah the other day, thought I'd share here! It's no rock crawler, but 5" of ground clearance is more than enough for some fun!

ive actualy been eyeballing the 4wds in japan at the possibility of shipping one over and ive yet to find one with anything bigger than the 1.3, tho ive gotten some great pics of the underside, and id swear they just narrowed a vintage toyota pickup rear axle and tossed it in

I could have used 4WD yesterday at the boat ramp. It was low tide, and I ended up on the sand below the ramp. I had to "rock" the Yaris / trailer combo back and forward a few times to build momentum to get back on the concrete ramp.

Some great pics. Makes me wish I was out west right now. There are tons of roads like this where you can make it without 4wd of a ton of clearance and get yourself into the backcountry. Your wheel bearings and what nots will not be thanking you though.

I grew up in upstate New York down win from Lake Ontario. It was Schoharie county a very rural place mostly farms. Even though we got tons of snow none of the farmers had four-wheel-drive pick up trucks always 2 Wheel Dr. they just put weight in the back of the truck when it snowed. 2 Wheel Dr. is cheaper and gives less trouble.

Besides in those days there was no differential action between the front and rear wheels. It’s not uncommon for that kind of four-wheel-drive to lock the wheels up and skid if the front wheels get out of sync with the rear wheels .

Besides the Yaris is kind of high in the air like an SUV. It’s not like a small car at all!
