http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/docum...f/OM52G61U.pdf (see page 310) I don't doubt that Toyota is moving to 20 weight as the industry trend has been to 5W20, and now 0W20 motor oils. But I don't think the TSB applies to the 1NZ-FE engine which is one of the oldest designed engines you can buy in a current Toyota and is in the process of being replaced by the NR engine family. |

5w-30 Amsoil full synthetic since the first 5K change. Followed the 5K mile interval and viscosity per the owner's manual, until it was out of warranty, and have been running 15K mile intervals since, using an Amsoil EA filter at each change. Almost 160K miles on my 09 here in Northern California, no leaks nor consumption, and highway fuel economy has held steady at about 36 MPG.
I put 16K miles on it in the first 18 months, nearly all of that in stop-and-go city traffic. Ran it for five years nearly all highway mileage when my commute changed- averaged 29K miles per year, with a high of 46K miles in one year. Lately back to short trip/city driving and fewer miles (commute to work changed again, and now let Amtrak do the driving). In any case, 5W30 synthetic in all temps and for all types of driving, most of that at long interval change outs. The 1NZ-FE is another Toyota workhorse. I'm hoping it will equal my 93 pickup and it's 22R-E with 370K miles on the block. |

Hmm I was hoping for a 500cc blown engine of ~75 hp a la the Ford 1 liter eco boost.

I've run nothing but 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum synthetic + Toyota OEM filters in mine for 7 years, at ~6000 mile OCIs.
Worked great in cold Wisconsin winters and works fine in hot Texas summers. |
