I read over this post and had the same problem. It was around 56,000 km that it started. If I shifted between 2nd - 3rd and 3rd - 4th then 4th - 5th. I took it into Toyota since the car was under the 60,000 km bumper to bumper warranty and I had only owned it for a little over a year. They went over the car, took them an hour. When they explained it to me I asked to talk to the mechanic. His words were "Lubed the linkage in the engine and around the transmission, but this didn't fix the problem. Took apart the center console inside the car, lubed around the stick and this fixed the squeaking". Toyota tried to charge me for the hours labor because they said "this is regular maintenance that I should be doing on my own" I asked for the service manager who said the same thing, so i told him, if you can find in my manual where it says to pull apart the center console and lube around the stick shift, then I'll pay you. after about 20 min of arguing they gave it to me for free. I really hate the dealerships.
No more squeaking. |

WD-40 is fine. Just don't expect it to be a permanent solution.

I have complained about this so regularly to my mechanic that he has decided to add it to the list of things he will do on my regular maintenance.
Now no matter what he goes in and puts a bunch of hard core axle grease to keep it from squeaking every time I'm in the shop. I hate it because it makes the car sound cheap and crappy and that's DEFINITELY not the look i'm going for with my car. |

Hello All,
I thought I'd give you a bit of an update. My linkages were squeaking last summer (09). I bought the car in the summer of 08. It was squeaking when shifting from: 1-2, 2-3 and 3-2. I sprayed the linkages with silicone spray, worked it in a bit and everything was great! HOWEVER, the problem reared it's ugly head again as things warmed up here two weeks ago. I sprayed the linkages again...but just a bit...and now the squeaking is back. I will not spray them again and will take the car into the dealership here shortly. (like within the next week or two) I am at 36,000km and my warranty is 60,000km. I will not pay a cent for the service. I will give you all an update on the situation. |

Finally sprayed my yesterday. Squeak gone. Shift action much smoother with less effort.
NOTE to Self: blast shift linkage at each oil change.

I have a 2007 Yaris S sedan with AT, I have a squeak during shift too. But I cannot find anything under my hood that looks like this, do I have remove the battery or look from under the car?

+1 on the don't use wd-40 to solve this or any squeak. wd-40 is a great cleaner and water dislpacer, but has no lube. so go ahead and clean stuff with it, but follow up with a good lube after. especially true on door hinges etc.

Well this issue magically re-appeared again on Tues night and has been off and on since then. I actually asked a Toyota mechanic what the prob was, what was causing my shifter to be squeaking again when shifting into third and usually when shifting out of 2nd and 4th even. He said that the shifter cables just need some lube, is all. Nothing really serious. When I take my car in for its 80,000 km at end of July, I'll have it taken care of then. He said its nothing to worry abt, and that leaving it be until then wouldnt damage my car or cause any wear or trear (due to lack of lubrication). (I just didnt feel like paying another $25 in labour to have it lubed today) Ill deal with it / ignore it until next servicing in abt a month and a half. Will update again once all is cleared up.
