Had the idea since my first car 4 years back with the MOBO under the seat and CD drive embedded in the dash, but never got the cash (nor around) to do it. The yaris is an ideal candidate though... A (USB) slot dvd drive where the head is, a "pivoting" 7" (or ist 8"?) touchscreen on top of it a VIA epia MOBO and a laptop HDD in the dash in front of the gear shift, and a set of amps will get you far. After that, a set of web cams can be added at the front & rear, an ODB2 analyzer and a nice distro of linux or a highly tuned windows... Arggg.. I think I drooled the keyboard :P

Did quite a bit of research on this before, but decided to go with the pioneer HU in the end.
Best choice for a double DIN head unit would be this: http://www.digitalww.com/DWW-6500.htm Touchscreen, built-in DVD drive. Yummy.

Yeah every time I see that thing I'm still tempted to rip out my pioneer... Plus, you just can't compare Pioneer's rather generic and somewhat laggy interface to a multifunction, customizable, skinnable one like Centrafuse...
One day maybe...

yea, the more i look... the more this makes a carputer VERY feasable!
A viable computer could be built fairly cheaply... and the best part about a computer is extremely easy and cheap expandability. The yaris has alot of space under the passenger dash, I think a computer could be worked in there, or possibly dig into the passenger glove box area. |

Go with the pc, it's much more flexable. I mounted my case under the pass. side seat and have the monitor mounted level with with the speedo dash area. I have the sedan and I think the setup is a little different then the hb.
The only thing is the monitor cable is a bit large and with out some time consuming tear apart I couldn't route the cable behind the upright plastic piece beside the stereo. Promount makes some nice mounting brackets for the monitor, but I wasn't spending $70 for mounting brackets. I used some steel from a local hardwares store that had holes in it, and just bent it to come out the front of the dash just under the plastic piece that surrounds the speedo. mp3car.com has a wealth of info .. go read ! Ebay has a good selection of mb and cases and what nots and also the mp3car.com has peeps selling used equipment. Mini Sumo Was Here |
