2 quick questions
Been driving my Yaris for almost a month now and I love it
Just 2 really quick questions. #1. Gas milage / meter. I'm consistently getting 400 - 420 miles on a tank of gas out of this car which is great. However I keep filling up as soon as I'm down to 1 bar and it starts flashing. When I fill up I have roughly 1 gallon of gas left, which means I'm averaging 40mpg on a tank of gas (good but not as good as I would like... but it's ok for now in Winter weather driving) My question is how far can I get on this last bar of fuel (and plz don't say 40 miles ). Does the bar go away? Does it go below that line? Any other on dash lights or warnings other than the single blinking light? #2. Winter weather braking I'm not used to the brakes in this thing at ALL. This might be due to me always driving older cars, or just perhaps different setups. My 95 eclipse had ABS and calipers on all 4 wheels. This Yaris is just.... crazy when I brake in ice and snow. I get this loud "bbbrraaauuuhhhh" and the pedal gets hard as a rock. I'm assuming this is normal and the cars computer is trying to "help" me brake more? My eclipse just stuttered and never locked the wheels.... while this thing I bet I could literally "stand" on the brake pedal and not get it to the floor. Help! Thanks! |

Look in the owners manual but I think when the bar starts blinking you have honorably driven the car as far as sanely possible. Seriously you're gonna be real sorry if you push it anymore.
The brake pedal isnt supposed to go to the floor under any circumstances! You got ZERO brakes if it does that. But I know what you mean about the hard pedal. My feet took quite some getting used to the hard brake pedal. BTW you shouldnt be braking so hard in snow and ice IMO even with antilock brakes. I would be taking my foot off the gas sooner shifting down and pumping the pedal. Or even using the parking brake on downhills. Its probably getting hard to tell you "back off because Im not letting the brakes go on anymore". |

Actually the point of abs is so you dont have to pump the brakes.

I remember being young and stupid and running my tank dry. It's way too much work fetching gas to get started again. Now, I start looking for a good place to fill up pretty soon after that last bar starts blinking. It's supposed to start blinking twice as fast when the remaining gallon's about half gone, but I haven't pushed it that far. Those who have completely emptied the tank report that the last bar just keeps on blinking.

Not to mention waiting for the last moment is no good b/c you don't want the residue from the bottom of the tank, you should really fill up when you still have a little bit of gas left in the tank.
Myself, I start looking when the 2d bar blinks, b/c I've seen it go out REAL FAST and spending half the afternoon hauling gas back to the car or waiting for the tow truck is just not my idea of fun anymore. .02 |

The Yaris tank is notorious for being oddly shaped. This means that each bar in the meter doesn't represent the same amount of gas. The lowest bars represent the least amount of gas. As someone who's incredibly lazy I couldn't bare the thought of walking even 200 feet to get gas let alone 5 miles so I always fill up when there's 2 bars left.

I drive the car so little that it takes me two weeks to get to half a tank! Not wanting to leave space in the tank for condensation to occur that when I fill up. On my ECHO I had for 8 years I only saw the blinking gas pump icon once.

When ethanol began appearing in gasoline there was a spate of advice to not let the level go down too far (allowing moist air into the tank) and not to let it sit unused for more than a few weeks lest moisture get in it and cause phase separation. Probably still good advice, though i don't believe I've ever encountered a problem with it.

Since "dry gas" is alcohol and now theres alky in our gas (10%?) shouldnt we have very water free gas tanks now?

well.... The last bar, can give you 30+miles.... It blinks every second.
It tells you when its dangerously close. It will start blinking two times every second and at that point. you probaly have like 3-5 miles to get inside a gas station right away lol.

On a road trip, I drove 30 miles on the blinking light. I don't know how many miles you can go, but I was happy find a station open 12:30 in the morning.

Toyota claims the tank holds 11.1 gallons, and when mine starts blinking it takes 10.0 gallons to fill it up. I haven't tried running it out.

The one time I ran it dry it went 44 miles before it turned off. And with the new fuel suctioning thingies, it wouldn't even start up again. It sucks every little drop out of the car if you let it. The most I let it go now is around 20 miles.
