Speakers in the hatch
I have a hatchback and I was thinking about putting some speakers in the actual hatch of it. Has anyone done this? I tried searching but couldn't find it.

I am sure if they can put a brake light in the top part, then speakers is just a matter of getting voltage and ground in there after cutting out the location. Question really is what you want to put in there and how much room there is to do it.
You would really need to get them in there very snug and solder the connections and possibly put some cushioning around the speakers because the continued slamming of the hatch would really test your positioning and mounting. I think it would be a great project. |

Eh because of the said point of being opened and closed shifting and such I wouldn't put any in there but that's me. I'm sure you could do something like that but there's not much depth to the actual hatch I don't think.

From a sound dynamics perspective, what is the point of the speakers in the hatch? Is it to project sound forward? You could easily do that with some fabricated boxes in the rear sides of the storage area to project obliquely to the front and you could angle them upward as well. Either way, the rear really is the best place for a subwoofer because mids and highs are really only beneficial when they can directly be aimed at the hearer and unless you plan to remove your backseat permanently, rear speakers back there wouldn't do much more than speakers in the rear seat stock location.
All my opinion. |

Depends if you're doing this cause you're bored or to impress some chics at the beach, or you just want to be different. Maybe you'll fill us in.
If you're just doing it to get more sound, upgrade your front stage and put an amp to it. You could go with as many as six speakers in the front of your car, if that's your ultimate goal of just fitting speakers in the Yaris.

Yea you should just angle out the rear speakers. Project the drivers rear at the passenger and the passenger rear at the driver. A friend of mine did this in his 240sx and it made this sound great with upgraded speakers. I'm sure it would work in the yaris too

I would love to embed a small sub int he rear hatch panel. Mainly because it is space that isn't utilized in a sense.
I saw in the '09 Rav4 Sport that JBL was able to squeeze one in there, and same with the HHR LT2. I thought it was a genius idea. Putting the sub there also allows me to avoid taking away from my ability to have open unhindered space when I fold my seats flat in my 3-door. Oh, and without losing my spare tire. |
