It all depends I have mine wired up so that I can have them on when just my running lights are on, not the head lights. Before I had them wired so they could be turned on by themselves. it just depends on how you wire them into the fuse block, wether or not you have them running off of a switched fuse or a constant powered one, make sense?

I didnt tap into any wires, I just used something like "Add a fuse" to hook it up directly into the fuse block, that way I wouldnt have to cut any wires, I know this isnt making a whole lot of sense so maybe if I took a picture of the fuse block that might help.

Here I took a pic, I didnt want to have to splice into any of the factory wiring so thats why I just jumped off of the fuses.

I did something similar to that but instead of the fuse, it goes to the grey wire off the cingarette lighter, I squeezed it in there heheh and my fog switch is always on. I run them every hour of the day.

Check this out from one of the DYI this way you can also run the fogs with just the ignition on you dont have to have any lights on .Easy to do also no tapping into other wires or fuses

Is it legal, though, to drive at night with just fog lights?

I know it isn't in WA state, but I don't think that will be a problem for you.

Please provide detailed DIY on your set up. I also want to run my fogs independently from the headlight switch. How do you "jumped off of the fuses"? Sorry, I don't know much about car electricals. Thanks!

I've analyzed that setup many times and I'm still bummed. Pardon my ignorance, is that wiring applicable for the Yaris S sedans that came with factory fog lamps?
