Brakes and Shocks question
I have a few questions i hope you guys can help me out.
Took my car to dealership today for maintence 20000 miles. And they said that my rear brake are 75% wore and front are 25% and they suggested me to replace them, cost me around $175 for the rear brakes. My questions is. 75% wore on the rear brakes on a 20000 miles? is it possible? how about the price? should i do it by myself? has anyone in here done it yet? And i'm thinking about changing my stock shocks to better one, something smooth like Camry? any suggestions? Thank you guys |

No way are they that worn with only 20,000 miles. My Tacoma, at 50,000 miles, was only worn 25% in the front and 17% in the rear as stated by my dealer. If they are for some crazy reason, yes you could do it yourself easily for just the price of the brake shoes.

Very possible... Even so as long as you don't do it again the last 25% should last you another 20,000 miles. Is your car an automatic and do you drive with two feet? People tend to ride the brakes that way. Shocks? I believe only TRD are available as of now.

60% of your braking horsepower should come from the front
brakes, and 40% from the rear.... so... I am saying your front brakes should be "worn slap out" parking brakes use the rear wheels Does that help any? Autobrake: RTO |

well, i would say, there are 3 possibilities.
1. you drove with your parking brake on. 2. you hammer the brakes every single stop...I doubt this because the front discs normally wear out much faster than rear drum brakes. 3. your dealership is full of s--t and they are trying to rip you off. If you do not have access to a jack and a air gun, use the cars emergency jack like you are changing the tire for the spare, then dis engage the park brake and pull on the drum till it comes off, you may need to tap at it with a hammer. then, inspect the brake shoes, they are the C shaped plates that clamp on the drum. If they have less than 2mm of material on them, you will see a little line where the metal bracket seperates from the pad material. if it is less than 2 mm, the shop is telling the truth and you need new rear brakes.
