Cargo space : Yaris vs. Fit

The other day I was walking to a Honda dealer having a look - for comparison sake - to a Honda Fit... honestly, I still believe Yaris has a nicer interior, but there was something surprising to see. Both cars - Yaris liftback and the Fit have exactly the same wheelbase and almost the same total length - the Fit has some extra 1.5in, and similar front and rear leg space...

Now comes the difference : the Fit cargo space is significantly deeper in terms of length, by at least a couple of inches

Any idea why Toyota couldn't do the same

edit: just seen on Toyota's site, the Yaris RS (Canadian version) offers sliding rear seats which increases the cargo space, wow!

The Honda's fuel tank is under the drivers seat allowing for a deeper floor in the rear. The fold flat and seat-base fold up option are nice too...

If you look at the Yaris LB, it has a rather more raked rear hatch than the Jazz. That, as well as the clever seats all conspire to make the Jazz the superior load hauler.

But if I wanted to cart goods around all the time, I would have bought a truck!

The Fit does have more cargo space, but at the cost of looking like a small mini-van. The Yaris actually still looks like a hatchback coupe. I'll gladly give up the few extra inches of cargo space (which I'll probably never miss) for the much nicer looking Yaris.

-Yaris design not only looks good, but has an excellent drag coefficient (.30), while the Fit's is probably pathetic, since Honda hasn't seen fit to publicize it. Which might explain why the Yaris returns better real-world economy when compared to the Fit.

-Both Yaris and the Fit might have almost the same wheelbase, but the Fit is 7.4 inch longer.

The Fit's gas tank is under the driver's seat? I don't think I would like driving around knowing that! Hope they have a big side beam protecting the tank in the event of a crash.

The rear of our 5 door hatch has plenty of room for my goalie bag + pads & sticks.
Yes this is hockey equipment.

Well, at the rear of my 5dr hatch (with seat up) I've got my 2 wheel dolly that's rated for 250lb, my mountain buggy stroller and I still have room for 2 or 3 bags of grocery. Granted, the dolly and the stroller folds up very nicely.

well, hatchbacks like yaris & fit(jazz) have never mean to have big cargo space... and i believe most people will not put that as an important criteria when the select these kinds of car anyway... :)

before i bought the yaris, i was a bit concerned about the amount of cargo room.
but my family of three has had no trouble at all with space, we've gone on camping trips, week long vacations, loaded the yaris to the hilt on several occasions but never been left wishing i drove a larger car.

the magic seat in the fit looks great, i'm amazed at the amount of cargo space with the seats down, but i would have yet to find a use for it in almost 2 yrs of owning a yaris and can't imagine many situations where i would need it.

finally checked at the dealer: rear sliding seats add something like 7" more to the cargo space, it's kind of huge! Hopefully Toyota will put this as a standard in the future

The 60/40 split and sliding rear seat is cool, but I'm beginning to think that the inexpensive bench is more comfortable.

In Canada, only the RS version has the split/sliding seat in the rear.

I have a 2007. Can someone provide information on how to slide the rear seat back? To be clear, I'm not talking about flipping the seat down. I see the rails underneath but can't figure out how to make the seat slide.
The manual mentions sliding it back before putting in the car seat but the manual doesn't say how to slide the seat back.
Btw: I'm not in Canada where apparently this is only on some models.
