It's also a problem for cyclists, who can't tell if a driver waiting to pull out from a side street has seen them or not.
You can also take off your sunglasses at night. Can't do that with tint. |

oh yeah. I didn't think about bicycles. they don't follow the rules anyway. they are always running stoplights and signs. i'm surprised more don't get run over. they shouldn't even be allowed on the roads without proper lanes for them, then they should pay a licensing tax and have plates to ride on those. (imo)
the front windscreen is not tinted, so night driving is not a problem. (the 1% of the time I drive at night) living in phoenix, i'm sure you can see the advantages of tint in the summertime... |

I do appreciate tint here in Arizona, but unless you're using cheap dye tint (the kind that turns purple in a few years), darkness doesn't have much to do with heat rejection. Good, modern tints have coatings that block light in the UV and infrared spectrum, which is invisible, but it's where most of the heat comes from. 35% feels like a good middle ground to me. |

Commute by bike for a few months, it will give you some insight and a full dimensional view of road use...and has the added benefit of becoming a better driver. Sure some cyclists are arrogant asses, as are many drivers. But if you're going to be that guy that nit picks over a cyclists rolling a red or a stop sign when there is no car in sight on small side roads then you must also be that driver that makes sure they are going the exact speed as the speed limit, makes a complete stop at all lights and so on and so fourth. Oh and follow rules just for the sake of being a good rule follower even when it makes virtually no sense to. I think it's time to tranfer this part of the thread over to the gen discussion. Poor OP cringing every time a new off topic post comes up

I used to be a bike mechanic and commute by bike year round, only reason why I have a car now is because of my job requirement. I agree lots of people don't ride accordingly to the laws and common safety sense, but so are many drivers too who take driving very lightly as if having a car shields you from the outside world and other road users.
For myself, I do obey all laws and signs wether I'm driving or riding. Which gives me the right to actually criticize those who don't and that applies indiscriminately to all road users. I understand the benefits of tint in very warm and dry areas and I'm not against it. Just as long as people don't over do it or for the look factor. I strive for everyone's safety on the road. When I'm driving I hate bicyclists.
When I'm biking I hate motorists. When I'm walking I hate both. |

hahaha! this is a funny tire thread! I follow all laws except speed limit. (and tint law) I always stop for all stop signs, even if there is no one around. (someone might be hiding) rolling a stop sign is a 4 point ticket, same as doing 20 over the speed limit. I do ride my bicycle, but it's on the sidewalk to the bike trails. I never ride on highways or side roads because I know how hard cars are, and I don't want one to hit me so I am permanently damaged or dead. i'm not going to risk it because "i have the right of way." that's just arrogant and leads to dead. I don't even cross the walkway in front of cars at the supermarket. I will wave them by and walk when it's clear.

I agree, that offset and width looks just right on your car. I like the wheel design, too.
And thanks for getting the thread back on topic. |

Thanks guys, your opinion is appreciated greatly! Now I just want to drop it about 1-1.5 inches, put high performance struts/dampers, and a rear sway bar on. I think that will finish off the stance nicely. I don't know if its's the tires themselves or the width of the wheel but I do notice more wandering on some road surfaces. I haven't checked the speedo yet to see how much its off but the mpg has increased about 3 mpg, which I can't explain as I am coming from stock steelies and tires. I have noticed a little less pep due to the new increase in weight.

I initially installed Nitto NeoGens (which handled extremely well), but the car seemed to follow the uneven and scratched road surfaces at lower speeds and wandered terribly on the highway at higher speeds... even more so than with the OEM junk. So I began experimenting with tread patterns and found that lower speed tracking and higher speed wander could be reduced or completely eliminated depending on the tread pattern. Just by looking at the left rear tyre on your car, I can see that the pattern is not one I would install on my Yaris; those tyres will tend to drive the car for you as you fight to maintain control. |

Great info Kimona. I was a little afraid of that after I started driving it home. It's not horrible wander, but I definitely notice that I have to pay attention to what I'm doing. I'll keep the tires for a couple of years and then I'll need new tires again so I'll go a different route at that time. What type of tire works best with our cars? A softer directional? I chose these tires because I felt that they'd work best during our rainy season. I guess it's live and learn, but I'm completely satisfied with this car, if anything it's these little nuances that make it more interesting. Thanks again!

The difference in between stock and the 205/50R16 tires you put on is 0.5%. So (theoretically) your speedometer will read 0.3mph high at 60mph, and your mpg will be exaggerated by about 0.17mpg. So, not much.

Thanks again. I did just use an app to check the speed and it was within 1 or 2 mph. So I'm happy with it.
