Manual Yaris

Well, I was finally able to purchase a 5 speed Yaris. Does anyone know the transmission fluid change interval on the manual transmission Yaris? I changed my automatic at 100,000 miles, but I'm not sure what to do with the manual transmission. Thanks for any suggestions.

There isn’t a requirement to change the fluid in the 5 speed transmission.

I’m at 131k, never changed it out.

I asked my dealership this question in regard to my 2010 Yaris (5MT). Their response:

Toyota doesn't have a recommended mileage for transmission fluid. They recommend it gets inspected every 30K. Toyota now uses a lifetime fluid and may never need to be changed until the clutch needs replacing or maintenance.

FWIW.

In the Maintenance section of your car manual it'll indicate that inspection is required every 40k km / 25k miles.

However, if you go to the end of the maintenance section, you should find an additional service requirements section. This section basically says that if you're constantly put your vehicle through extreme conditions, it'll need additional servicing. Those "extreme" conditions include

- Driving on rough, muddy or snow-melted roads
- Driving on dusty roads
- Towing
- Repeated short trips, less than 8km, in freezing conditions
- Extensive idling or low speed driving for long distances
- Stop-start city or suburban driving
- Continuous high speed driving at speeds greater than 140km for 2 hours

Under this section the recommendation is to replace the MT gearbox oil every 40k km/25k miles or every 2 years. Now before anyone points it out, I do understand that not all of the "extreme driving conditions" are going to warrant changing the gearbox oil.

In saying that, it's good practice and a rule of thumb to change your transmission oil every 80 - 100k km or 50 - 60k miles, or earlier if one of the aforementioned inspections reveals the need to.

Don't listen to anyone touting that an oil is a "lifetime" oil. There's no proper definition around "lifetime", and in my books it's deceptive marketing. Oils break down over time and with use. In the case of a manual transmission, changes are easy and the oil is cheap. It should be done periodically as routine maintenance, regardless.

Cool. Remind me, do the 2010 hatchbacks have tachs?

Also, I would change out the MT fluid every 60k or so. It's something easy, and gives extra assurance on keeping the transmission healthy. Make sure you change out the gaskets, and open the fill plug first before the drain plug, if you DIY.

KL, unfortunately my Yaris does not have a tach. Why Toyota didn't put a tach on all of their manual Yari is something I don't really understand, but oh well. I have an Ecometer I bought from MicroImage way back when, and it has a digital tach. But it's just not quite the same thing. Plus, I have trouble seeing the readout in heavy sunlight. So....

I don't quite have the level of know-how to change out my own tranny fluid, but I'm learning DIY here and there. I'm going to attempt my own oil changes soon, so who knows. I kind of feel changing out tranny fluid requires a level of expertise that I just don't have and, in my luck, if attempted would end up in some sort of catastrophe.
