Which engine oil for my Yaris

Hiiy Folks.

I bought a used yaris.
TOYOTA Yaris II Hatchback (XP9) (01.2005-12.2014) 1.0 VVT-i (KSP90_) (51 KW / 69 PS) (01.2005-11.2011)

Which engine oil should I use.
5W-30
Or
5W-40?
Is C3 or B4 kind of specification matters or any 5W-##.

Which gearbox oil I should use.

Thanks in advance.

Here in the US, the proper oil is printed on the oil fill cap. We don’t have the 1 L engine here so I really couldn’t advise you except for the oil cap.

I take it you have a manual transmission?

In the US a good grade of 75–90 gear oil is used. I have to leave the same thing with apply to your car in Finland.

Good luck and tell us what happens!

Hi rajee,
You have 1KR-FE engine.
For Finland you should be perfectly fine with 5W-30. No need to use 5W-40.
Minimum required oil for your engine is API SL or SM. However, get youreself API SN oil. They cost the same and SN is a lot better for the engine. The SN oil simply was not out yet when the user manual was printed. :)

Note that this API SN can be combined also with other code, such as SN/CF. Thats OK - the Sx part is for gasoline engines while Cx part is for diesel engines.
The brand of the engine oil is really not that important. Just buy anything that sounds familiar to you (Shell/Total/Elf/Valvoline/Mobil...) from a trustable source.

For gearbox oil - use 75W-90 GL4. In this case, DO NOT USE GL5 or higher. Do not use oils that claim to be all-class GL4/5/6. Yaris gearbox is a gourmand one - newer oils with lower level of friction make the shifting quite problematic, especially in cold conditions.

As for the brand of 75W-90 GL4, I tried Valvoline, was good. I also tried Mobil, was good. I also tried original Toyota oil - that was THE BEST. Harder to get, costs more. I know that the car service centers usually use ANY oil, they do not insist on brand. Toyota however, they always use their own gearbox oil and they know why. I am not sure what additives they have in that oil, but works well.

The thing is that Royal Purple and/or Redline are nearly impossible to get in Europe. Well, at least in the Czech Republic here. I have read a lot of good stuff about them, I just do not have a chance to get them here. Plus it is not worth it having that shipped around the whole world if I can get original Toyota liquid from the local dealership.

I prefer synthetic oil though as it keeps it's properties and quality much longer even if you don't extend oil changes, your engine will better protected.
