2016 Model Auto Transmission?

Does anyone know if the 2016 Yaris will be a 4 or 6 speed auto transmission? Was really looking forward to it having a 6.

You won't see a new drive-train/engine in a "Yaris" until 2017 when Mazda builds it for Toyota (likely a rebadged 2016/2017 Mazda2 Hatchback) - meaning you will be getting current-gen Mazda quality not Toyota quality at that point for the "Yaris".

The 2016 Scion iA (a rebadged 2016 Mazda2 Sedan) uses a SkyActive direct-inject engine, and 6-Speed manual/automatic, and everything else Mazda, minus the cosmetic changes to the front grill/bumper.

Considering that the new 2016 Yaris Sedan in Canada is the same rebadged Mazda2 as the 2016 Scion iA, expect the 2017 "Yaris" hatchback in both the USA/Canada to be pretty much the same thing mechanically as that.

^^^^^ This. Someone, within the last few days, posted a PDF fact sheet that Toyota put out for the 2016 Yaris, and the 4 speed auto is listed.

Not so sure about that. Mazda has been making very nice cars as of late, and I don't think Toyota would put it's reliability-based reputation on the line if it had serious concerns regarding Mazda quality.

The DI engine issue is becoming pervasive, since manufacturers are forced to adopt the technology in order to meet CAFE standards.

However, Toyota did do a good job with its hybrid fuel injection system implemented in the GT-86. A Mazda skyactive engine with Toyota's hybrid fuel injection system would be the perfect combination!

Personally, I'm wary of the new "direct inject" engines, as they "run hotter", require very stringent build quality/durability to prevent premature failure, and really aren't very compatible with fuels using ethanol additives (almost all U.S. sold fuel) - meaning they require more preventive maintenance to keep from gumming up, etc. I might be more receptive towards them if 0% ethanol fuel was readily available. As it is, the current negatives just aren't worth the slight boost in MPG and horsepower that they deliver - at least to me.

I prefer the reasonable performance and time-tested durability/quality of the current Yaris VVT-i engine, but would avidly prefer that Toyota put a "Corolla horsepower version" (~130hp) of the VVT-i into the Yaris SE instead.

DI engines will go much longer without issues if people would actually DRIVE them in most in stances . It is no different that multiport or ither variants. You need to put them up into their higher rpm ranges every so often to burn the garbage out. The problem is that most folks don't do that.

The boggest issue really is that if you are always just nursing the gas you will get in trouble quicker since DI doesn't have the ability to wash fuel over the valves.

Noticed this a while ago. Not sure if its anything new. Thought I'd share.

Seems to indicate a possible 6 speed automatic and manual for 2016. Possibly borrowed from Mazda? Only time will tell....

By the "New Car Features" spec it is still the U340E 4 speed auto that has been used in all previous USDM Yaris.

which, BTW, is a brilliant piece of work... better than the 6 speed automatic in my Camry.

What's wrong with the Camry auto?

Nothing wrong with the 6-speed Camry transmission, but it's not as intelligent as the 4-speed Yaris automatic. Unlike the Yaris, it's not always as smooth shifting and occasionally hunts for the gear. The Yaris upshifts and downshifts flawlessly. I can't say the same for the Camry.
