2009 Toyota Vitz/Yaris 1.3L hatchback Engine Heating Up
Hi guys,
I own a 2009 Toyota Vitz/Yaris 1.3L hatchabck in Dhaka, Bangladesh which came here as a reconditioned car from Japan last year. There was absolutely no problem with the car until last week when I took the car for servicing. I used Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 for the first time instead my all time Mobil 1 of the same grade. The mechanic also suggested the car was little low on coolant and poured half a liter of Toyota Long Life red coolant in the radiator without mixing water. Originally the car came from Japan with pink coolant in it and was still in the system. The next day, I flushed all of it out, changed the water pump and put only red coolant mixed with water. Since then the car is acting a bit strange. First, when I start the engine in the morning, it seems fine for the first 20-30 minutes and then suddenly the radiator fan will start when the car is moving slow or at a stop light. It will start and then turn off in a few seconds. But if I turn the AC on, the radiator fans will only take an interval if the car is moving but will not stop if the car is moving slow or at a stop light. None of these happened before. Today, I have installed a water temperature gauge and when the engine has warmed up, it shows 95-100 degree Celsius and the cooling fan only starts if I turn the AC on. I took the car to Toyota here and they said the cooling fan in their scanner started at 86 C. Also, the car knocks a little when it starts from a cold start. Now is it ok to have operating temperature from 95-100 degree Celsius? Should I suspect a blown head gasket? I will get the fan checked soon and the thermostat seems fine too as it gave enough hot air when I turned the heater on. The current temperature in Dhaka is around 30-32 degree Celsius at the moment. I am really feeling frustrated and have shown it to a few mechanics who did not see any problem with the car. But I know the engine is heating up than usual. Please suggest what to do or if anyone has faced similar problem. Thanks. |

The thermostat opens at 90c, I believe.
Anyways, since you flushed it, you may still have a few bubbles in the system. I would try to bleed it again and see how it goes, but there shouldn't be any issues if you are not overheating. Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |

The biggest mistake people make with refilling the coolant on the yaris is not opening the petcock on the back of the block while starting to fill it. You are supposed to leave it open until fluid stars to flow out of it, then close it and continue filling. If that petcock is not bled it is very difficult to get all of the air out.

run it parked with the rad cap off. when the tstat opens you should see the coolant drop down a bit. Fill it to the top until no more bubbles come to the top. This will help you rid the system of any excess air.

Lisle makes a great tool for cars that don't bleed themselves. Makes the job a lot easier when car manufacturers don't make the bleed point obvious (and less messy even when they do):

Thanks guys. I don't know what's happening with my car since I changed the coolant. I now regret doing so. The overheat light had not come up yet but for the last few days coolant is disappearing from the reservoir and i dont see any leak or any trace of coolant on the floor. I topped up each time and after driving for a while, the coolant level in the reservoir will go down. Have I blown the head gasket? Also the car struggles to start in the morning and then gets started in the second attempt. There is no sweet small from the exhaust, heater gives hot air and the engine oil looks fine too. But the car seems to be still heating up. Took it to Toyota here and a local mechanic and they scanned the car with obd scanner. It showed coolant temperature is normal. What is wrong with it then? Also heating up at stop light is still there and only acts normal if the ac is on with the fans running. :-(

It heats up as in the red light on the dash comes on, indicating overheat?

The red light hasn't come on yet but the symptoms tell me the temperature is more than normal. I have learnt it the hard way from my past experience of driving a Nissan micra overheating.

To check for a blown head gasket, use this:
