Why is one front axle struggling to turn? - Toyota Yaris Forums

Hi,

Would be grateful for some advice please.

I noticed a knocking/tapping sound when driving that increases in speed as the car increases in speed. It's same whether under load or not and whether driving straight or cornering.

I jacked the front end up and took the front wheels off and 'drove' the car (FWD) in second gear. The offside hub span at a reasonably quick speed but the nearside hub and axle were struggling and spinning a lot more slowly. Plus making a clattering sound.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

The noise could very well be a bad CV joint.
As far as the wheels turning at different rates of speed, this is just the way the differential is transferring power to the wheels while there is no load on them.

Yep, very common for one to turn. Some cars with traction control will act funny like that. The computer can only assume the cars is going down the road.
Get the car up on stands, put the trans in neutral, and spin each wheel by hand and listen to it closely. A noisy wheel bearing will growl.

Another thing after watching the video is if you don't have lugnuts holding the rotors on tight that it'll make clanky noises.
