Radio swap from 2012 LE/SE into a 'L'

Just curious: I am thinking about swapping a radio from a 2012 LE/SE model (that has the Bluetooth built in) into my 2012 L.

How do they have the Bluetooth set up in the 2012 LE and SE models? Is there a microphone located somewhere?

In my wife's 2012 xD, (it appears that) there is a microphone in the map light housing. Does the Yaris have something similar?

Also, does anyone think I will have issues since the L only has 4 speakers (versus the 6 in the LE/SE)?

Thanks!

-Richard

There should not be an issue with speakers as extra pair of tweeters are just wired via a capacitor, signal taken from the woofers (same four channels)

Here is the install guide for the LE radio. It doesn't reference the Bluetooth mike, other than saying to test it in the final check out.

^ wow, didnt even know that existed! Looks like a useful site/subscription! Thanks!

Looking at the wiring diagrams provided by CTScott (earlier) it appears to reference an "Amplifier Microphone Assembly - D135". Guess I need to figure out what that is...

EDIT: Ok, seems that I have found where the Mic goes (just northeast of the temp knob), but alas, mine on the 'L' appears empty. So, I assume I will need to get some sort of Mic Assembly for that.... ugh...

^ Thanks for the pic of the rear, Garm. It's interesting: there isnt much of a difference between the two radios connections. I am curious where the Bluetooth Mic is supposed to plug in or if it has to be inserted into pins.

I have circled the only difference that I can see between the two radios, but vrwm (owner of the 'LE' pic) doesnt show there being any connector in that port (which is weird)...
This is the 'LE' radio (taken from http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37300)

This is the 'L' radio (taken from Garm's pic above)

but alas, thats just what I can tell from the pictures. I get my LE radio in a few days, so I will know more then.

Ok, made the swap today to the LE/SE radio - no bluetooth, as expected. I am going to have to try to get a part number for the microphone/amp mic assembly (I assume it inserts into the circled plug above).

[EDIT: Looks like I might try out PT546-74120-MC, its a Bluetooth Mic for the Scion IQ - I'll post how it goes.)

But anyway, everything else works great! Took me less than 10 minutes to do the entire swap. I just am ready for bluetooth!

VERY easy panel removal

Here are the wires

New Radio In! (sans bluetooth :-( )

Ok, just picked up the microphone for the Scion iQ... don't know if its gonna work. I havent seen ANY 8 pin plugs that it could plug into and the wire colors dont match the colors on the Yaris wiring diagrams...

Here is a pic of what I got:

That mike is for the IQ's optional nav system, and as such unfortunately isn't documented in the IQ EWDs.

yeah im looking at the Toyota Tech info... kinda kicking myself i didnt look sooner

Edit: After further looking, this mic is used in all of the Scion iQ radios, including the base model (according to the installation instructions). The base model iQ radio (PT546-00120) is basically the same radio as our LE/SE model (minus the RCA Outputs). All the rest of the connectors are the same....

I just cant figure out where this mic plugs into the unit!?!

If it is used in all, then it should be shown in the Radio EWD.

Strangely it doesnt show any microphone on the audio EWD for the iQ. Just this mic is referenced as needed in the install (Page 3).

Ok, it appears that the mic is wired as part of the 28 pin adapter. The Scions (and probably older toyotas - im new to toyota) were wired for the JVC headunits and require an adapter cable to convert them from a 20-pin + 8-pin to the 28 pin used on the pioneer radios (can be seen in post #6 of this post http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=291059). The 8 Pin adapter shown - thats the Mic cable. Now I just need to figure out the corresponding color wires.

Ok, I found the 4-pin connector for the amplifier microphone assembly. (it was taped to the HVAC wiring harness )... While I COULD rewire the iQ mic, I think I am gonna wait till I can get the actual part.

This is the 28 pin connector and the 4-pin that is referenced in the Yaris wiring harness

Very cool, richard... If I got a 2012 it would be an L, so I would like to do this. (For the HD radio, though.)

Here's another question: Anyone know if radio reception as good on the new one as good as the original?

And while I'm on it, has anyone who had the previous version Yaris compared radio reception to the 2012 one(s)?

I know radio is so "yesterday's news", but I listen to a ton of fringe AM and FM radio, so good reception is very important to me. IMO the stock radio in the older Yaris is very good, so I hope the new one is at least equally good. My dad recently got a new Yukon XL (Suburban, basically) and the radio in the new one is definitely a step down from the 2008 one.
