This stuff got WAY too much attention back in May when it was all over the news media. In a head on collision a lighter vehicle gets it worse than the heavier one. Well, duh. Let this poor dead horse go without further beating.

The Camry weighs 1 1/2 times as much as the Yaris. Run the Camry into a Nissan Titan and it'll get similarly squashed. Or the Titan into a motor home. Or the motor home into a semi. Or the semi into a train... The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did this just to scare people out of buying little cars like the Yaris. They want us all in big cars for "safety," and propose to make up for the loss of gas mileage by making the big heavy cars hybrids and lowering speed limits. (That crash was done with both cars going 40 MPH, so the new limits will have to be less than that.) Ignore them and they'll go away.

my take on it... i'd rather be in my Yaris than in a Smart for Two... at least the Yaris didn't get tossed like a Frisbee!!!

I always drive with a huge comfort zone so. I feel sorry to the one that gets in an accident like that. We all know what we were getting into buying this small car in the 1st place. Its a gas saver yes, A life save I'm not gonna be the one to find out.

Look around the accident reports in here (mine included) and you'll see that most people walked away with a little stiffness. The Yaris does very well all things considered. just don't try to park it in the nose of another moving vehicle!

I think head on collisions with another car's front end don't happen too often. They happen, but not much. I've been in 2 totaled car accidents and none were ever head on collisions. In working in the ER, I ask my patients about their car accidents and the majority of the time it isn't a head on collision. Out of all the reports from yarisworld members of the last year or two with yarii getting hit or getting into the accidents... many have lived to tell the tale so to me.. that's safe to say the Yaris is a very safe car.
I think the hatchback / liftback fairs better than the sedan in collisions, imo. My 2 cents.

I totally agree the Smart car is the worst car to buy for safety so thank you Toyota for making the Yaris a safer car!!!!!

I agree with Yaris Hilton. Momentum has a lot to do with the mass of the object. Heavy objects need more force to be put to a stop. The same thing happens in football: the player who hits softer is the one who gets hurt more. It's basic physics.
This doesn't make the Yaris unsafe to drive. It makes SUV's more dangerous to us. |

Speaking of collisions, can anyone tell me if the 07 Yarii have air bags in the seats. I wanted to put seat covers on mine to help keep them clean. The owners manual was kind of vague. BTW new to site so if it is already posted I have missed it

side airbags were optional on a 07 and would have a tag on the side of the seat that says airbag
