Automatic Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill

Hi all,

I just wanted to share my experience with the drain and fill of my 2007 Toyota Yaris automatic transmission fluid. My car has 133K miles and this is the first time the fluid was changed. There was no issue with the transmission but the fluid color was darker than the new ATF fluid.

I used the following tools: 3/8 in 10MM socket $2, 3/8 in socket ratchet, 1/2 to 3/8 socket reducer, 1/2 in adjustable torque wrench, 12 in - 3/4 in copper pipe as a cheat (on the ratchet) to get better torque.

I purchased these parts from Toyota: 10MM allen ATF drain pan plug PN 90341-18016 $5.77 and washer (gasket) PN 90430-A0003 $3.25, 6X 1 L bottle of Toyota WS ATF PN 00289-ATFWS $9.50 each.

I elevated my car on ramps, put a 5 qt oil pan below the car and then attempted to remove the drain plug. It was not easy to remove and I slightly stripped the allen head of the bolt (this is why I needed to replace the bolt with a new one). After the fluid slowed to a drip I replaced the bolt and washer (existing) but this was not a good idea. I tightened the bolt to 35ft-lbs.

I refilled with about 3 bottles of fluid. I check the fluid level with the dipstick and added as necessary.

The following day I noticed a very slow leak and then went to the dealer to purchased more fluid and the bolt and washer.

The following weekend, I did the same procedure, this time using the new bolt and washer, now the leak is gone. I planned to do the 'drain and fill' twice since more fluid would be replaced. I hope this helps anyone who decides to do this work themselves.

If you can change a spark plug or oil on your car, this DIY ATF 'drain and fill' is about the same difficulty. The dealer charges $100 for this same work (done once). This work takes about the same time as changing your oil (about 15 minutes).

Did you fill it back up via the dipstick tube?

Yes, I used a long funnel (about 12 in) designed for adding transmission fluid through the dipstick. I could add pictures of all parts and tools if requested. It is attached.

Go purchase Toyota WS fluid plus one more court than your car will hold.
1. Drain the pan.
2. Refill the pan with exactly the same amount you drained.
3. Locate and remove the fluid return line from cooler to transmission.
3. Remove it and drain into graduated container.
4. Start the car, drain out the balance of the fluid as you add the new fluid.
5. Reconnect the return line, top off the fluid to proper level.
(As an added benifit you can also change the filter if the fluid is really dirty and burnt).
This will get most of the fluid out of the car cost effectively.

I have yet to change the atf in my 2014 Yaris. do all the automatics have the transmission cooler? my production date is 01/2014 if that helps with anything.

Mine is a 2015 and it has a drain plug (10MM hex)

The transmission cooler is located in the radiator. I did not remove the return line I am just changing the ATF with Toyota WS (World Standard) fluid. Not as efficient as emptying through the transmission line but not as messy! I have 60,000 on the clock. Mine is a 2015. biggrin:
