Ac compressor lock wheelnut spun off
I was driving home today at around 60 mph and I was speeding
up a little going ever a hill and I heard a loud rattling noise let off the gas and it was gone, accelerated again and it came back, accelerated again noise was gone, I pulled over and checked it out and saw the ac compressor wheel nut had spun loose and was still there layin in the pan below the ac compressor pulley unit. Stopped by the local shop had the mechanic retighten the wheel nut and turns out my water pump leaking too, he said he got the wheel nut back on really tight but on my way home the very same thing happen this is really weird. I dont have the two prong tool to put back on tight. whats next? I wonder If it be ok to drive short distance with out the wheel nut on? Last edited by krolos; 03-06-2019 at 09:11 PM. |

That's really odd. Check the threads yo see if they are damaged. If they are fine then Macgyver up some tool and throw thread locker on it to keep it in place.
I'd also check it while the car is running to see if you can see anything wobbling when it is reinstalled. I'm not entirely sure of that parts purpose as I'm sure the pulley is bolted on?

The photo didn't work but instead of tightening it lots, use thread locker compound on the threads when you put it back on. That will help it from coming loose. e.g. https://amzn.to/2H6igpj

It's actually a damper and it happened to mine while under warranty. I asked the dealer to reinstall it with thread locker but they insisted on replacing the complete compressor at no charge.
If it happens again I agree with previous replies and would just use thread locker. |

I wonder if a special circumstance that causes this to happen? Like over speeding the compressor by down shifting 2 gears.
