alright. i'm tired of trying to get my miles to go up. i've been driving like my grandma for the past 4 months! its sucking the life out of me! i'd rather get 25 miles per gallon, but drive the way i like! i'm a little bit above 3,000 miles, and i'm about to get an oil change. someone told me that might help. i don't know...

what are you averaging? i'm averaging 39 mpg.

do you do "jack rabbit" starts? i feather the gas pedal from a stop and i don't go below 1500 rpm. i shift at 2500 rpm from first to second, and shift 150 rpms lower after that. and i drive mostly on the freeway.

I have always had an increase after engine break in. The only thing is all my other Yotas have been real tight (engine wise) and seemed to be really hitting there stride at about 30K.

check to make sure none of your wheels are seized or the park break accidently on?.... if Auto that it's in OD instead of 3?...

i'm averaging 28 miles per gallon. i do all city driving, mostly stop and start as i drive mostly during rush hour to and from work. a guy at the hyundai dealership (my botfriend just got a new car) said to change after the first 3,000 and then every 5,000 after that to help break the engine in. i haven't been doing jack rabbit starts, but i damn sure am going back to that now. i am soooo fed up with everyone darting in front of me cause i'm going so slow!

1) check your tire pressure - i run at 40psi for a comprimise between ride/handling/mpg

2) change your oil every 5k. toyota has put hundreds of thousands of dollars into research, and they say 5k. the us military has put hundreds of thousands of dollars into reasearch, and they say 10k ... everyone else either works for the oil industry (and wants you to buy more oil) or is guessing...

3) in dusty conditions, change your air filter...

did you calculate it right? my is sedan and i can do average of 34 to 35.
Don't drive slow it's not help at all
i do drive like a gramma b4, shift at 2500 or less and still not help,
but now i drive fast and hard most of the time, AC on all the time, shift at 3000 to 4000, carrying at least 30-50 pounds of junk all the time, and average is about 34-35mpg. i do change my oil every 3k.

this is the absolute worst kind of driving when trying to achieve good mileage, i would say 28 mpg is not terrible for city driving, especially if it is bumper to bumper rush hour traffic.
my car is used mostly around town and i average about 29 mpg in the winter but now it is up to 35 mpg since the weather warmed up.

your mileage will also improve as the engine breaks in more.

jack rabbit stars won't get you anywhere more quickly, they might be fun but they aren't going to achieve anything.

Don't worry! I averaged 32-35 the 1st 4,000, since then 37-42 and have 9,300 miles now. Yes I changed my driving a bit, but not that much....42 psi in the tires,more used to the car, and I think it finally broke in, and may still be improving.

calm down, the oil in the engine helps break it in. wait for the recommended oil change. drive wisely, and it will change. The engines already have some break in. remember you are getting better mpg than most, and you have to find your groove!!

I drive my car like I stole it, every where I go I give it hell, I usually shift out of 2nd at 20 then to 3rd at 40-45, then into 4th at 60 and into 5th when I feel like it. I still average 32 miles to a gallon and this is all with 18 in wheels!

yeah, if it's stop and go traffic dont forget that every minute you're sitting idleing your still using fuel, unless you do like me and shut the engine off if you're not moving for a while!
