Anyone try a Ducted fan?
I watched a vid of the MCM guys testing out an Ebay fan charger( it failed in every way).
But I had some RC jets, and one of my jets will fly at a bit over 300 mph. It uses a ducted fan with 4 kg of thrust, @ a cost of $130. for the fan. So I was wondering if any of you have tried one of the high end ducted fans? Seem like if one could make a controller, you'd have a low cost blower with a boost of near 8 psi. Interesting idea.
The problem is that its power input range is 1.0 to 5.7 KW. That would equal 71 to 407 A at 14 VDC. Considering that the stock alternator is rated for 80 A, you would need one heck of an alternator upgrade to power this thing. Even one rated for 1.0KW max would put such a load on the alternator (and hence engine) that your power gains would be pretty well negated.

But if you powered it with a pack of LiPOs, you could get limited on-demand boost, couldn't you?

Electric supercharges just aren't viable, a belt driven setup would make more sense

there was a guy a while back that did an electric supercharger in a way that was viable (thomas knight) though he has kind of fallen into obscurity. his kits were like $2500 and came with no management. he used a bank of batteries in the trunk that had to be recharged so it was almost like nitrous as in you had a difinitive time before refueling the system.
his also had a constant CFM so the boost would go down as the RPMs went up. his dyno graphs were almost flat. you would get boost and go to a certain hp and just stay there to redline but the PSI would drop as the RPMs would rise. All that is really old though and I haven't read anything about it in a while. The separate power supply I think is the key and the blower with a huge CFM with the capability of holding a high enough PSI. Even then, it is limited by charge of external batteries. |
