Hi fellow Yaris.
My battery on my 08 3dr hcth is dying on me. I had have a jump this afternoon to get back home. The battery has been in the car since 08. This is the first thing I've had to replace "Yarrie" since I bought "her". I stop by AutZone and the guy said the tester indicated that the battery was "bad". Yes it was bad it almost left me strand in the middle of town. A woman next to me gave me a jump, I had jumper cables.

Probably should have gotten a little more life out of it but. Was it the original? You sit in the car with the engine off running the radio or CD player for long periods of time? Dunno but typical life expectancy is 3-4 years though some have reported longer.

Time to get a new battery.
When a battery goes bad depends on many varibles but, 3 years is not that uncommon.
Contrary to popular belief, heat (not cold) is the biggest killer of batteries and I see you live in Florida.

The Autozone "duralast" battery is acutually very good.

This happened to me. Battery died in 2010, was a bad battery after getting it checked by autozone. Unfortunately, mine died in the winter (it was really really really cold that day). I believe it was due to the stock battery's low cracking amps. Replaced it with a duralast gold with higher rated cold cranking amps and it's working great so far. Had to remove the plate thing at the bottom where the old battery sits because the duralast gold sits too high with it in place.

Just put a new Excide 35 series in my '08 hatch too. Don't remove that tray. Just bend the tab at the back of the hold down and you're golden! Worked great for me...

Yes, just make sure you get a #35 battery no matter what brand you get.
The #35 is an industry designation and any #35 battery will filt.

Just replaced the battery on my 07 hatchback with a Toyota battery I bought on sale from Elmore Toyota. I was tempted to leave the tray out since the new battery was a bit too tall. I got it to fit by doing exactly what you did. After I bent the tab on the back of the hold down, it fit nicely.

I have had no issues with my stock battery so far on my '07 sedan, but I don't imagine it will last a whole lot longer. I'm going in the other direction then all of you though, and will be getting a smaller Deka 15 lb battery...

I had to replace mine after a year, but it was because the ecometer was sucking the life out of it.

I bought a new one at WallyMart and it had more cranking amps than the OEM battery. You can't go wrong if you get Wallymart's top of the line battery!

My stock battery from my '07 died on Sunday - replaced it with the less expensive battery from autozone - the battery appears shorter than the original causing a problem with the rods that secure the battery with the engine hood holder ... any suggestions ?

You could go to HD or Lowes and get some threaded rod of the appropriate diameter, cut to fit, get a couple of the right size washers and nuts and make your own. What I'd do in a pinch. Don't use that piece anymore, have it in a box somewhere.

they also sell shorter j-hooks at pep boys, and i'm sure advance and autozone.

Dont sell your battery short. The one in my ECHO was seven years old when I sold it.

Stick something under the battery to raise it up a bit. I put a redtop in mine and it came with a plastic spacer to raise the height.

I am on my 3rd battery in my 07. Last battery I bought was from Discount Auto Parts. I bought the best one had a 3 year free replacement and just had it replaced after 27 months. It was cranking very slow. I took it to Advance Auto and they bring out the 1,700 dollar tester abd tell me it's "Good" I went to another place got same answer. I had to park where I could push start it if needed every time. after 4 days of cranking slow it finally took a dump. And Discount tested it said it had good charge but low cranking amps

and replaced it free.

I had a car that ate a few batteries in short order and thought it was just crappy batteries until one day whilst opening the trunk my arm brushed by the trunk light..it was warm, evidently it was staying on all the time and draining the battery.
I now have a similar problem with my newly acquired Mazda and i suspect the alarm system is draining the battery prematurely..

I still have the original battery in my 05' echo, and my dads 05' echo. Seems like living in florida gives you premature battery failure lol Thats with -40*C in the winters too
I do have a redtop at work waiting to go in my car though
