at what point do the stock rods/pistons fail?
so im looking to buy a yaris and turbo it (i have built 3 neon engines from the ground up for boost and put together a sealed itb turbo intake motor with a efr 7064 turbo pushing 450whp on e85and self tuned it so i know a thing or two but looking for a newer platform)
any way now to my question at what horse power/ tq point do the stock rods or pistons ring lands fail on these motors? thanks Taylor |

that is a loaded question to be honest. there isn't necessarily a cut and dry answer because there are a LOT of variables. The rule of thumb however on the 1nz has been proven to be for the most part around 8psi for longevity and you can 10psi with the right tune and correct fuel setup, etc. There are supposedly however people down in PR that say they are running 12-16psi on stock internals. I am kind of at a loss honestly on that one. I blew 2 rods but my wastegate stuck on me. We had another previous member who went around 4 months at 12psi and then came out on a crisp, cool fall morning only to get a couple blocks and have a rod bend.
I am currently running 200/190+ hp/tq on my setup on pump gas. I hit 220/210 on VP100. Welcome to the forum. Your best bet would be to do a search in the Forced Induction section. Over the last 7+ years we have had a lot of discovery. Feel free as well to shoot me a PM if you wish to discuss my experiences.

from my digging around here with a solid tune the rods fail at approx 200-190whp/tq
now what is the min for a built block rods ,pistons, head studs, now who makes the cheapest forged rods and pistons (no being cheap just on a budget) |

Oh I know you're not trying to be cheap everybody has to be on a budget and if I had any sense at all I would be on one too...lol

Molnar rods would be the cheapest I would use. I am running @10psi on a stock block.

dezod looks to have the best budget options
molnar rods $395 and cp pistons $599 which beats TBR by like $100 or i can go with BC sportsman rods for $417 even if they only can take 100hp per cyl thats a big safty margin from what im looking to get out what im planing to build. im thinking 300whp will be scary enough for my blood, Last edited by Tid; 03-28-2014 at 02:08 PM. |

The EFR does look like a really good efficient turbo

I can compete with Dezod, or anyone. I personally wouldn't use Molnar rods, but it is a less expensive option.
I'm actually shipping off a set of CP pistons and Carillo rods today.

what seems to be the issue with the Molnar Rods? They appear to be of good quality and on a engine like this I see no real difference between them or Carillo. What kills me is you can buy a v8 set from Crower and still pay the same price for a 4cyl set.

I would assume it is supply and demand. There is a lot more demand for v8 rods and pistons.
