cold air/exhaust mods vs mpg

so i got thinking, would a cold air intake improve MPG by giving the engine less "work" to breath?, what about a header and a more free flowing cat or bigger pipes?

i know on old iron v8s you could truely gain MPG by tossing the iron manifolds for headers ditto for the crappy air cleaners

im not looking for HP gains but but MPG gains, but i also know with more power often comes better efficiency

has anyone ran the numbers on a CAI vs stock mpg numbers? or header/pipes?

Best thing you can do is just run a pipe from the stock airbox to the inside of the fender so it gets cold air. It will improve power and efficiency since the engine won't have to work as hard. As for the exhaust, unless you get a full exhaust with headers that would require tunning for best results, a simple muffler swap won't give you any additional power or mpg loss, simply give you a different exhaust note.

Doubt the gains would be noticeable, but 1NZ-FEs do have a gnarly intake sound under load with a cone filter.

well thats a bonus LOL

the big thing where i think there "might" be improvement is the fact were running deliverys meaning were "loaded" with extra weight so any HP gains may help boost the mpg as the engine is allready "working" it would just work less hard

of course its all theory right untill i test it.....

Too bad the C50 is such a boat anchor with a brutal 1-2 gap, Kinda kills all the momentum you had from 1st lol. I wish we got the C56 in our cars like Japan did with the Vitz RS.

its the auto not the manual soo not sure that the gaps all that bad, trust me..she still wishes it was the manual but the wait list for the car when it was new was silly, in fact she only got the options she got cause the dealer had just gotten 3 a red on this blue one and a silver one, it was either this or the fit...trust me she was all about getting an RS manual 5dr..but it would have been close to a 6month wait and she is NOT a patient one

a CAI can potentially lower your MPG...if you drive it harder! haha. Otherwise, it will free up a few ponies (barely noticeable on most CAI for the Yaris).

The best I've tried is the DC version, if you can find one. It's a pain to install, but gives the most noticeable gains (butt dyno) and gnarliest sound. I've also had the AEM/TRD version, as well as a generic (ebay) version modeled after the AEM.

I do have a short, cut off intake tube (I forget what brand it was) that was cut to make room for a velocity stack. That's one I haven't tried, even though I have it. If I can dig it up again, I'll sell it to you if you don't find anything else

Other things that improve power and efficiency:

Lightweight pulley
lightweight flywheel

automatic soooooooo no flywheel

does the pulley really make much differance tho? i mean sure all rotating mass cut down helps, but it seems like an insignificant amount

i "might" have found a vendor for carbon hatches and hoods but cant seem to verify if the 09 units were the same.....certainly the hatch would be a good weightloss..i doubt the hood would be much

It helps in the manuals cause it makes it rev quicker and be more responsive which makes quick downshifts a bit easier. Otherwise it won't really help.

i guess in theory every oz counts, especialy spinning weight

on a side note the CAI showed up..used ugly and in need of being returned..but...im "testing" it and can say the pickup on hill under heavy load is actualy better than expected and the noise is...FUN lol, fresh tank of fuel so we will see what the mpg change is like, tho knowing what ive run so far and the fact the weights been higehr than normal and where th guage is sitting id say theres a noteable change
