2012 Toyota oil chart : What the ...
!!! Looks like it states 5w-30 non synthetic only . A bit misleading since there was the TSB EG018-6 giving approval for 5w-20 . Have a signed approval of that from a Toyota service center and from the corporate headquarters in California . There's also a chart for Canada that gives approval for 5w-20 and 0w-20 , http://pdfcast.org/pdf/toyota-oil-recommendation . You'd think they'd be the same since it's the same 1.5 ltr. engine . Does this mean if there's an issue with the engine that they could void the warranty by discovering use of a 5w-30 or lighter synthetic oil ? Here's the chart , http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...29#Post2624429 . Is this legit ?

Synthetic has higher tolerances that conventional anyway. I ran 5-20 in my motor from my first 5k change and the inside of mine looks clean as hell.

Just found this better reference chart, http://wms.tkcarsites.com/PagesOnThe...Type%20V12.pdf . We've been using synthetic since around 15k.

Wow...
Thanks for the useful information, Hershey. The question now is why no synthetic oil in the Yaris? Just checked my 2012 owners manual and it specifies SAE 5W-30 like the other years and says nothing about synthetic. |

They probably want the repair shops to use the cheaper conventional oil in a customer's car and to not sell them the more expensive synthetic. A five thousand mile oil change with conventional is more than adequate; the synthetic really is overkill.
As to only specifying 5w30, if you were only going to recommend one grade of oil that worked everywhere and was the most common grade available in most places, 5w30 would be what you'd say. |

It is an oil fill chart, meant to be used by people servicing the cars. They probably list them as conventional only, as not to not cause so much confusion.

i honestly was very worried about waiting 5 thousand miles for the first oil change, but apparently thats the correct way to go nowadays with newer cars.

I don't think anyone should wait that long for the first one. But supposedly nowadays all the traditional engine breaking in is done at the factory.

That is a small part of it. The oil companies have been lining the manufacturer's pockets for decades. Perhaps you have heard of the engine created over 50 years ago that was able to get much more than what the Prius does today back then? The information and evidence was bought by a major player in the industry because at the time oil was dirt cheap as it was along with plenty of other reasons that they found to be a threat. If you take a look at the technology today in oil refinement or at least what is being advertised is that the processes and additives are strengthening the end product to the point that it can last longer. Also of course engine efficiency has been increased dramatically. Sure, I am championing AMSOIL, but also I have run Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Penzoil Synth, etc mainly because it has been proven to not only give you longer drain intervals, but better pour temps and lower engine temps/wear patterns. I personally didn't hesitate in the least to go the 5k that Toyota's blend called for on the initial change. As previously stated you can use what you wish for lubricants. If the engine fails and the manufacturer wants to not warranty it then they have to do all of the homework to prove that what you placed in your crankcase was directly related to the failure of the parts.

5W20 or 5W30?
The manual for my 2012 yaris calls for 5W20 but the filler cap says 5W30. Does it matter if I use 5W20 or 5W30?
