You know USA car companies are going bad when.......
police agencies like NYPD start using Nissan Altima Hybrids for regular patrol AND undercover operations.

Im shocked they dont start using Fusion Hybrids... They would work for the use.
Its been the longest tradition here in the states for law enforcement to buy American cars to keep at least a small portion of the economy here for interceptors. Sad to see that even now they are starting to stray from buying American. Yeah, would be funny to see a Altima Hybrid try and keep up with a Mustang on the highway. Instead of hearing a big roaring V6 or V8 for a cop car, its you get a nice putter or maybe an electric wizzing noise as they try and catch up with the perp 2 blocks away. I wouldnt even try and run from this:

Part of the problem is that some cities as well as states are in financial trouble. They are looking for ways to be spending wise. The future will require that American auto makers come out with cars that can meet that demand.

I can see on a reliability factor that it would be smarter to buy the import hybrid over the domestic.
Its just the image that the people portray doesnt help, if your local government doesnt have faith in an American brand, why should you? I jumped ship a while back when I owned two GM vehicles, one was good (older 90's model 4 cyl.) and the other was the best motor I could ask for, just a shit tranny. So I opted for something smarter along the lines of less likely to die on me was something I liked. I mean if this is the concept of how things will be 10 years from now, only Domesitcs will be the old (now new) beaters that people cant afford to replace when GM Ford and Dodge/Fiat are begging even more for business or have already gone out of business.

Found this...
Technically they are not buying an Import, seeing that they made and assembled right here in the United States, it just happens to be a Nissan. They are using their normal CrownVic and Impala or Charger setups for highway, these are just better options for CITY use only "The Nissan Altima Hybrids were acquired earlier this year following evaluation and testing by the Police Department’s Fleet Services Division and Driver Training Unit. At $25,391 per vehicle, the Altima hybrids cost about $1,500 more than the conventional Impala. At 35 miles per gallon for city driving, the hybrid Altima gets double the gas mileage of the Impala, which gets only 16 miles per gallon. The Altima hybrids, manufactured in Smyrna, Tennessee and outfitted with equipment specialized for patrol, will be used in addition to the Chevrolet Impala and the Ford Crown Victoria. The Department also uses Dodge Chargers, mainly for highway patrol. As with all hybrid technology vehicles, the Altima switches between gasoline engine and electric motor. After a year of monitoring the vehicles performance the Department will determine whether to further expand them into the fleet."
