Recommendations for 40,000?

Hey guys,

I just changed the oil & filter yesterday on my '10 base sedan. I believe that marked my 8th oil change since buying it. I recently purchased a full set of new tires back in May and it includes free rotations for the life of the car, is there anything I should ask them to check while there? More specifically, is there anything critical at 40,000 miles(I'm like 41,500 to be exact) such as belts, doing a tune-up, etc? Believe it or not, I'm still going strong on the original factory installed brakes. I pulled the front tires back in the Spring and the pads looked brand new still. Lastly, with the Winter not too far off here in New Jersey, is it worth having the battery checked after three years of use?

Just trying to touch all bases as I am a big believer in preventative maintenance.

Come back in another 60,000 Miles. I am not joking .. these cars are so good that is really what I am recommending. Other than the usual things like oil changes, tires .. and maybe a battery you should be good to go for another 60,000.

My car at just over 100,000 miles ... and the only maintenance things I have had done is ... tires, a battery (after 6.5 years) and a water pump (warranty issue). ABS brake issue (well documented here on this forum) .. but that was covered under warranty.

Change the gear box oil the key here is get quality product like Redline MT 90.

Clean the throttle body, MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner and clean the PCV valve.

Other than that these cars are reliable just need a tune up to get it running good.

^^^^^ This.

Other than maintenance things (oil/oil filter/air filter/tires/battery/spark plugs,etc....generally done very sparingly) at 256,000 plus miles I've only replaced the front wheel bearings at 110,000 plus and the alternator at 159,000 plus. The alternator on my model year (2007) has a known defect (faulty voltage regulator, I believe (and IIRC the voltage regulator on a 2007 Yaris is inside the alternator) and I believe this was corrected for the 2008 (and obviously after that) model year.

Check under the hood for pink stains on the passenger side. This would indicate your water pump is leaking and needs attention.

I do this once a month.

not much at 40k

Really your car is still young at 40k. fyi- the brake pads wear out faster on the rear wheels verses the front brakes like rear drive cars. You might want to remove the drums and look at the brake pads/shoes there. Battery should be could to 3-4 years unless it's giving you problems with charging, than replace it. the serpintene belt is good for 3-4 years also. If you still have the original spark plugs you might want to remove those, check the gap, put anti-sieze on the threads and put back in so that when it's time to replace them at 100k they won't be so tight.
