2012 Ford Focus ELECTRIC
Looks pretty good, although not as good as the standard 2012 Focus IMO even with the Aston Martin grill. Who's going to buy the ugly ass fish faced Nissan Leaf compared to this? Only bummer is that Ford isn't outfitting the sedan with the all electric set up, only the hatch.
Ford's continuing the amazing roll they're on. Quote:

What's the range? I can't find it in the article.
And 17" wheels? LOL

There probably won't be an EPA estimate until the fall as this car doesn't go on sale until late this year. More good info on Ford.com... http://www.ford.com/electric/focuselectric/2012/ |

I'm going to take on an electric conversion project pretty soon, this technology fascinates me.
I wonder, if you gutted a Focus or Leaf, put extremely light wheels etc. (all the stuff we do for racing), how much the performance and range would improve?

Ford touting Focus Electric's lack of maintenance

batteries is the main problem. you'll spend 1200 in batteries....and have 1100lbs worth of wire and batteries and battery mounts in the car. that's more than the factory engine ... and you'll still need the factory transmission (manual is best as you dont have to hit 1200rpm to activate the stall on the converter.
but, other than maintenance of batteries you can throw gas, oil, belts, sensors, wiring issues, heat issues, radiator and coolant, and all the other 'engine required' problems out the window. plus some good batteries like optimus are expensive at first but last forever. i had an old prelude i seriously wanted to swap over. i figured a 200kw motor and 10 batteries would do fine. but, it was easier to junk the car and use the money to buy another honda...acutally jeep lol any way, there's tons of sites out there to swap over to full electric and other conversions. they go over safety cutoffs and maintenance schedules and such...wiring advice, motor advice, adaptive bracketry and such. |

electric heating....but it seriously drains the battery. for serious eco-freaks you'll be much better off with an a$$-warmer. but, i work out in a mechanic's shop, and i got a 10min drive....so, dealing with the cold wouldnt be a problem...seeing as how it hits 110 in my area during summer, i need AC though.

Well I think a larger wheel would actually help an electric vehicle since the motor puts out so much torque? The larger wheels would help it roll and maintain momentum better I'd think.

All this R&D and still the filler gap seems like an afterthought... Couldn't they just have placed it beneath the cover in front of the rear view mirror?

Is the big radiator grill in the front really needed if its totally electric?
