NEW TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS HELP!
Hey everyone, I've had my yaris for about 1 month now, its got about 900 miles, with an auto tranny. Now, whenever we start the car up, it has the "cool" light on usually for a couple of minutes. Its still in the 30's here durring the day too.Heres the problem.
When I leave my house, I instantly have to get on a highway, about 60mph. The transmission will NOT shift from 3rd to 4th until a little while after that light goes out. So i've been driving at about 45 until that happens, as it revs high and is at about 3500 rpm when i do the speed limit. Is this normal??? It seems like that could damage the engine if I was next to a freeway thats 70mph. THanks |

It's normal. It's part of the Yari's warm up process. I'd say if your going to get on the freeway right away, just let the car warm up a tad bit longer then just hopping on and gunning it. Have fun driving :)

That just seems really weird that you would have to wait. I'm guessing thats pretty hard on the engine if you drive it right away while its still in 3rd right?

That's normal, and the same with my daughter's Echo automatic. The engine/tranny has to get to a certain temperature before it will go into 4th.

yes, even when the cool light goes off, the engine is not yet at full operating temperature, this is normal...

Running cold engine (with cool light on) on highway speed might not be a good idea, so I would suggest take 1-2min to warm up your car in your case since you have to take highway right away.

The engine cool light will go out at 130 deg F. The engine isn't warmed up till 180 deg F. Until the engine is warmed the transmission will not upshift to fourth. Some say the ECU is separate from the transmission, but I guess not.
