Misfire/sputtering in cold weather
Hi YWers. My Yaris seems to have a misfire/sputter of some sort when it gets cold outside upon start up. I changed the plugs, but it's still doing it and am just curious if anyone else has had this problem and if you have any clue what it could be? Thanks.

Dirty maf sensor would be my guess but I'd check for codes.

I was having the same issue last winter, I noticed I was getting oil down the spark plug tubes that was working it's way down the spark plug threads and onto the plugs. I pulled all the plugs, cleaned them with brake cleaner and installed a new valve cover gasket that includes the spark plug tube seals. I thought that solved the issue but just yesterday following our second cold snap of the year the car did it again. I'm convinced it's not MAF related as it only happens on cold below freezing days when the engine is stone cold, and it will sputter sometimes or even stall on initial cold start up and then run perfectly normal. I also cleaned my MAF a while back so I know it's clean. I would say check your valve cover bolts, especially the inner ones to see if they have loosened up of the years. Also pull a couple of your plugs to see if you're getting any oil on them. In my case I'm going to check the plugs again this weekend, and maybe consider changing them since they are the originals and it's due. In my case I'm getting no misfire or any other codes. When it does happen I believe it's below the criteria number of misfires in a given time, etc to set a P0300 or P030X codes.

Thanks, guys. I changed my plugs. The old plugs didn't look bad. I will clean the MAF sensor. I haven't checked for codes. I don't have the tool, so I'll have to get it read.
