Patience is all you need. Brands don't really matter.

Powertools make a big difference. Mostly a random-orbital polisher.

Correct application of the proper products in the proper sequence is 90% of a good result, an orbital buffer can help but do know what you are doing or you can really bugger it up

http://www.meguiars.com/

Lots of sites like these two that will walk you through the proper procedure

If you want to get into buffers this is the general way to go

There is a new formula in the "Ice" line of products called Ice Wax. It is clear like the previous stuff and comes in a similar spray bottle. Make sure it has "wax" written on the bottle. You can spray it on your black plastics too. The shine is extreme on your paint and super easy and fast to apply. On exterior paint it really shines and on plastics it will out last other protectants too.

I use the Ice Wax, it is insanely easy to apply and doesn't streak/leave white. I don't know if the shine is up to standard, and it also doesn't last more than a few weeks with some rain showers.

I've used Malms Carnuba and ultra fine polish for 20 years. It's a two step process-use the ultra fine polish first and get that smooth deep shine, then apply the carnuba for a warm protected glow. Yes, this stuff is for fanatics, but the look is worth it.

I've used Zymol, Zaino, most Turtle waxes, Meguiars, NXT, etc etc.

As most people said, application and surface prep is really what makes the difference. I've found the old standard Turtle Wax in the green tub to last the longest. It's a HUGE pain to apply manually though.

I've also used em all on various cars over the years but its hard work and you have to do it often, now i just do the whole process once a year in October to give the paint some protection for the winter, the rest of the year its whatever the carwash is spraying
