water pump lifespan
hello, anyone know what's the average lifespan of the water pump in these cars? I have a 2009 with 259k miles and still have the original water pump. I have no issues at this time but feel like it's about the go out on me soon and don't want to be stranded. what is everyone's experience on water pump failures? do they start leaking from the wheep hole before they completely fail or what? any noises before they fail? Should i just be pro-active and replace it before it fails on me? Any torque specs on the water pump screws would be helpful also, thanks guys.......

Yaris water pumps have been known for their premature failure rates, so count your lucky stars that yours made it to 259K, let alone only 75-100K.

15yrs, 375,000km and still on the original. It seems to be a hit or miss component. I do believe that the reports of failure dropped 2009+.

Hi leave alone. My 2009 went out at 25,000 miles.
The clutch, fuel pump, alternator, carburetor and distributor on my 1974 beetle went 250,000 miles. The wife’s Camry 2005 Has had two water pumps in 190,000 miles

weep hole
So it's best to just leave it until it starts leaking out of the weep hole ? You don't think it'll lock up on me and ruin the belt and leave me stranded?

First sign of failure is usually the appearance of coolant being sprayed in a line on the underside of the hood. I'd just leave it be and look for signs of spraying everytime you have the hood open. While there have been a lot of failures, there are also plenty that have not experienced issues. No point throwing money at something out of paranoia.

Like I said, I had the pink line on the bottom of my hood for 5000 miles before I had the pump fixed under warranty. Water pumps used to fail a week or two after the first league but that was 30 years ago. These Toyota pumps are different. If you have a good one, keep it!

As others stated, they rarely will just fail catastrophically but rather leak.
I had a cheap aftermarket one start failing 12 months after it was installed. The bearing started to fail but the warning was a terrible noise. Your water pump wont go from being quiet and working fine to put of no where completely seizing. As long as your coolant was replaced at proper intervals to keep the wp lubricated, you will be fine.

I replaced mine on my 08 Yaris back in 2015 when it had around 140km. I used an airtex water pump and it worked fine when I sold it 3 years later
