DIY: debadging trunk chrome thing, help?!?
before you question me,
YES i have looked at the stickys, the DIY compilation thread, and the debadging thread, YES i have debadged my emblems before and put them back as well. i doubt there is a DIY thread on doing this specific piece, but if there is and i missed it some how, i am very sorry excuse me for not knowing what to call it, but ill call it the Trunk Chrome Key Guard Thing (TCKGT) but my goal is to take it off, black it out, and put it back on, all of which i know how to do EXCEPT taking it off. im curious if my Trunk Chrome Key Guard Thing is different from the peoples TCKGTs' who have taken theirs off, the reason be, is because mine wraps down under, shown in the pics below: ive tried to use floss but it just keeps ripping on me over and over again. so i feel like im doing something wrong, therefore the reason of this thread. should i just be soaking the cracks of this sucker with wd-40 and have it with more floss??? appreciate it if anyone could help me out |

Try removing the trunk liner if there is one (been awhile since i worked on a sedan) and remove the nuts that hold the trim piece onto the trunk lid.

i am currently in the process of waiting for the first coat of primer to dry i think its also safe to say that maybe for 09 + they attached it differently because everyone else was saying its the same as emblems with residue and what not, but actually this piece for me was all screws only. (i drive 09 sedan) so thanks for the help! also if anyone has questions about doing this let me know! |

All of the trunk lid garnishes attach the same way. Did you make sure to remove all of the chrome plating before you primered?

Just asking because the paint won't hold up very well if there is any chrome left on

I've seen bottom of the line sedans here in Canada with that trim piece in semi-gloss black rather than chrome like mine (and yours). You might check with a dealer for it in black. An OEM part would surely be more durable, more attactive and a much simpler modification than cleanly removing the chrome and re-finishing.

Are you going to color match the factory paint or black it out I know you did the job but it would be nice to get a color match.

@ Revsson, yes, indeed it was too dark >:)
@ big lo, i just blacked it out with flat black (after sanding/primer that is). i never thought about color matching it but whateva! im happy with what i did. @ MUSKOKA800, yeah i already finished it and im happy with it for now, if i do later on decide that its not durable enough or i could do something to make it look better i will be doing that. (im just a baller on a budget doing things the cheap way ) now for the before and after: before: after: (luckily, i snapped this picture this morning, after the rain finished, and before it started raining again) also sorry if the pictures arent very clear, i took them with my phone |
