reverse gear whine

changed my manual gear oil a few weeks back... was in a rush to finish and didn't tighten the upper plug. noticed a buildup of dirt from a slow leak... found bolt finger tightened... doh!. took bolt out to check level, and found i had overfilled the tranny by a few ounces (car was jacked up, tilted slightly back...) good news as it means i lost very little.

but now that there is the correct amount, i hear a whine when i reverse. didn't remember it from before. was it quiet just because i overfilled? straight cut aisin gears are s'posed to whine... right?

im pretty confident all should be well here, and as long as everyone else hears reverse whine then i am.

and in case anyones interested, i used royal purple and am a fan of all their products that i have used. shifts nice n smooth.

Reverse is straight-cut, which is why it whines.

My stock oil shifts nice and smooth - or maybe I shift nice and smooth. I just gave it 10,000 mile to break- and all is dandy. This RP oil really make a diff? Which weight did you use? and is it GL-4?

royal purple 75w90 gl4&gl5 approved. not cheap but it doesn't take much. i noticed a difference, but not a huge one. some of us are tinkerers... fixing things that work fine. for some it's a hobby, others a passion, and a few a problem.

Yeah, I know. I used to fix things until I break them but I'm learning to leave some stuff alone - especially Ignition and spark plugs.

I don't think I've driving a manual 4 banger eco-car that didn't whine when reversing.
Don't recall much whining from my Eagle TSI AWD. Perhaps the AWD's box was configured differently.
