Vitz G's cluster in a 2014 Yaris LE

So I scored this beautiful gem off Croooober for the paltry sum of $135USD. I waited all day at work to come home and install it and it works perfectly BUT there are a few noteworthy things that it disables for some reason.

-Odometer will obviously be off

-it disables your cruise control if you have it, there are no cruise indicator lights on the cluster?

-your check engine light doesn't work

-all of your HVAC night time illumination doesn't work

-exterior ambient temperature indicator does not work

-panel dimmer does not work(I always run mine on full bright anyways)

-Traction control light stays on all the time

The cruise disabling is a bummer as I am an avid cruise user on roadtrips, the rest I don't care too much about because the cluster is so pretty.

One thing it does for whatever reason is make your throttle response INCREDIBLY punchy and touchy, not sure why. I like touchy throttles in a stick shift so I very much welcome it. Has anyone else installed a JDM cluster in a 3rd gen USDM/CDM Yaris?
I'm wondering if there is a way to get the cruise to work again and maybe the HVAC lights.

Anyways here are some night time shots, ill get better ones in the daylight before I go to work.

That's quite interesting. I think I was watching that cluster and had contemplated buying it. I've been scared off as I've seen similar cluster swaps resulting in all manner of warning lights pop up, including an incompatibility with a steering ECU.

Anyway, onto your problems specifically.

Cruise control - The cruise system is all built into the main engine ECU - a single signal wire. The stalk on the steering wheel sends a signal to the ECU to set and control the cruise. The ECU should then be sending the cluster a message via can bus to illuminate the Cruise and SET lights. Have you tried activating and setting the cruise regardless of not being able to see the dash lights?

The check engine light I have no idea. Again, this should be something that's activated via a canbus message. It could simply be an incompatibility between the JDM cluster and your ECU. If it doesn't work now, I don't like your chances of getting it to work.

With regard to the HVAC lights and ambient temp, these are probably related. The ambient temp sensor goes through the AC amplifier assembly and would then be fed to the cluster via canbus. A lot of the Japanese cars came with automatic climate control and most likely a different AC amplifier. Is your HVAC system automatic or manual? If manual, I dare say there's no way of fixing either the ambient sensor or HVAC lighting.

Regarding your comments around the accelerator pedal - this is very very surprising. I didn't think the cluster had any input into the response of the accel pedal. I had thought that was solely isolated in the engine ECU. Interesting to know though.

It's also worth noting that your cluster appears to be an Automatic cluster (assuming this based on the "eco" symbol under the speedo needle, whereas you signature indicates your Yaris is a manual? Just speculating that this could cause some level of incompatibility as well.

Other than that, it looks awesome :)

Cruise stalk is unresponsive when i try and turn it on at speed. Probably due to the lack of the Cruise and SET lights.

The check engine light does not illuminate at all when I turn on the ignition like it usually does, very odd.

I have manual HVAC. Auto was not available on the USDM/CDM Yaris. I can navigate it fine in the dark but it looks strange being pitch black lol

I could never get the car to break traction doing a full throttle 1-2 shift before, now it barks and wheel hops. Car has 195/50/R16s on it. Might be my imagination but I highly doubt it, the horrible throttle response was one of my biggest and only complaints with my car.

My Yaris is indeed a 5 speed manual, I have never seen one of these clusters without that ECO light. Maybe I am wrong, Im not sure.

Yeah so the ECU may expect the cluster to send a message out as well on the canbus for the cruise to activate and set.

Bugger about not having auto AC. Not necessarily saying it'd fix it, but it'd be something I'd want to rule out. If I ever buy the cluster for myself. I'll let you know as I do have auto AC :)

I wouldn't be surprised if there's something in play here that's changed the throttle response. Wouldn't be the first time I've been surprised by little things like that in a car that govern something else. Personally, I installed a throttle controller in the Yaris to get around the unresponsive throttle. It's programmed for teenage girls and the elderly.

I've also trawled one of the Japanese second hand car sites looking for examples of Vitzs with cruise control. I can't see any of the G's or GR models with that cluster that also have cruise. Looks like it isn't an option :( So doesn't look promising I'm afraid.

You're also correct on the ECO comment - they all look like they have that symbol regardless of auto or manual. I've just never noticed it on a manual toyota before.

I have an option for the cruise control. Not sure how well it works though. It popped up on my upgarage feed today :)

Huh, interesting little unit, not sure if it would play nice with a USDM/CDM ECU though.
