Trailer Towing? Bad or worse?
I'm about to have to move a motorcycle and trailer about 1400 miles. I have a 2012 Yaris with an automatic; and am about to have it fit with a receiver hitch.
I have towed with my 2009 Yaris; that had a manual. Same trailer; it weighs about 300 lbs and the bike about 550 lbs; it was doable but I could feel it. Purely by accident I stumbled upon, and bought, a 1999 Tacoma pickup truck with a bumper hitch and a five-speed. Four cylinder and about 215,000 miles on it. And it has slightly-warped rotors and needs shocks. But it's my throwaway work truck. I don't want to nurse a crippled old truck across the nation (round-trip; towing one way) but I don't want to tear up the automatic transmission on my new (24,000 miles) Yaris. Will it handle the load if I keep the auto tranny in "3" while towing? Or is it fine, regardless? Or should I just not do it and tow with the old pickup? |
