Best tires for snow
Just looking for advice on tires that work well on ice and snow, have a 2008 liftback and it's awful in snow with stock tires. Is there an all-season that works well or would an actual snow tire be necessary? As far as small cars in snow I remember my wifes '94 Geo Metro was Awesome for snow and ice, figured it was because the tires and rims were so narrow. My Yaris has 185/60s 15s.
Thanks ahead of time for the help! |

Currently running Hankook Winter iPikes on the Yaris, which have been outstanding. Running General Altimax snows on my Suzuki SX4. Both have been good in the cold/snow. Nokian Hakkapeliittas are fantastic tires, too (I had a set on my Civic).

Firestone Winterforce work pretty decent as well, I've been on them for 3 winters.

I'm enjoying X-Ice but understand that the new Hankook (727 ?) four-season outperformed the other four season tires, including Nokian, in testing.

We have Conti ExtremeWinter on the yaris, and have been happy with them. Ive sold a few set of the general's to corolla and Prius owners and they seem to like them. Sold a set of Hankook Ipike's on a transit connect this year, and I really really like the look of them (not bad price either), but I don't have any reviews on them.
The only winter tire I haven't heard great reviews of was the dunlop 3d (heard mixed things from BMW drivers) |

Actually Nokian Hakka 7 ( studless )are awefull on snow and ice. I'm wearing them right now, and going back to exchange, (30 day satisfaction Guaranty), them for either the new Toyo Observers or Yoko IG20 ( before I had the IG10 Yoco, and they were AMAZING, lasted me 6 seasons, note that I wore them with first snow and took em off when snow melted, great on mountain roads )
Problem with Hakka 7 , the studless one. The Hatchback Yaris is too light and wheeling too narrow and tire has a harder flank. Meaning needs the car to have weight to grip. Which is true, if I add 3 of my friends, with a a baggage, Its WOW as tire., But yeah. I'm not gonna be traveling around with bags of gravel. Even if For this particular tire, Nokian accepts that you inflate tire to 29.5KP to grip better, you have a slight difference, but you lose on fuel economy = your tire costed you A LOT... Im From Montreal, winter conditions, sludgy, icy, crappy, snowy, hardened lateral parking snow..... we know em pretty well. Tires HAVE to be Good. Note: Hakkapelita 7 studded, will only be good in black ice, or lean ice, Hatchback is still very light for tire to fully grip on hardened snow or snow even with studs. Sorry guys, I tried, I had high hopes for that tire... Last edited by Delfire; 01-25-2012 at 11:07 AM. Reason: + Notes! |

I have conti extremewintercontact tires. Absolutely amazing in snow and icey roads. For real deep fluffy snow the firestone winterforce is great...i used to run them on my old malibu..and my friend has them on all their cars...they are so so on the icey stuff

So, I ended up getting a set of Nitto NT-SN2, 65.00 per. Had them for over a month now, excellent on both snow and ice, can't beat the price. Very satisfied and happy!
