30,000 mile service: owners manual vs Dealer "recommendations"
Yaris owners manual just recommends replace engine oil/filter and air filter, yet dealer wants to do a whole lot more for big $$$. What to do?

Follow the Toyota Service Manual's recommendations. That's all your car needs. Dealer is just out to make some money.

Nothing big is due til like 100,000 I think. Just make sure you keep your tires rotated and change the oil and filter. I am coming up on 65,000 on mine and I am not for sure but I dont think anything major is going on till 100,000 thats when the plugs and stuff are asked to be changed and possible tranny and radiator. My dealer advised me to get a intake induction and injector cleaning every 30,000. I had one done at 60,000 and I could tell a big difference with the carbon build up removed. They used BG 44k and used BG products and slowly sipped it through the intake as well. It was only $100 and it helped greatly.

^ k wait, what do i buy and how do i do it? I may as well do that right now. I didn't bother rotating the tires because i just replaced them with winter tires and i'll buy some lightweight 16's for the summer.

The BG service is a rip off and does not need to be done. If you have a problem with buildup at 60k miles there is something else wrong. Use a better brand of gasoline like texaco, sunoco, shell or bp/amoco. A can of carbourator and choke cleaner works just as well for cleaning after the problem is fixed. I can't stress how much better burning a quality fuel over time will keep your motor clean. Stay away from independent stations like 7-11 is now, and el cheepo bargain un branded fuels. Use a injector cleaner in your tank once a month like the techron. |

I have used Marathon gas and a can of seafoam every other time I filled the tank. Trust me I could even tell a difference after it was done. It doesnt hurt to have it done plus the $100 was nothing to have it done since the kit of BG 44k cost $50 by itself.

Its your money...spend it as you see fit. Its another way for mechanics to make a little extra cash off of you. They sell that stuff at tire shops too. It is useless.
Marathon gas has STP addatives in it. But it is an independent station and buys gasoline on the open market.(whatever is the cheapest) |
