Rear Wiper "Coverage" Problem Solved

Quite a few have said that the rear wiper on the 2012 and up models is really made for the benefit of right-hand drive U.K. cars.

I noticed the same thing in a recent rain storm and thought, this is almost a useless design. Then, while sitting at a stoplight in my new '13, I was behind a '09 Hatchback and noticed it's wiper arm is a little bit "longer" and angle just a tad different. I wondered if this would work?

Went to my dealer, they had a used '10 Yaris Hatch on the lot. Just as a test, my tech took the wiper off of the used car, put it on mine and "Whoa", it is a whole different story. It really gives you the coverage/view you want in the rain. Why did'nt Toyota just use this wiper from the previous generation???...It really works that much better!

Just ordered a new wiper "arm" for a 2nd generation Yaris to put on my third generation. The "blade" is interchangeable from both generations, so you don't need to order that with it. You just need to order the "arm" from an '07-'11 Hatch to do the switch. It 95% fixes the design flaw of not covering enough glass.

Hope this info helps.

Cheers,

O.

Oh! Thanks for this. I too had noticed that it really didn't cover much of the glass.
I wonder if they dealership will let me change this part with my warranty untouched.

the wipers suck even on the second gen, but anything is better than what we have. I don't even use it because of how worthless it is :p

Update on Rear Wiper Coverage Problem

Through trial and error, here is what I have found out:

When you order the '07-'11 Wiper Arm from Toyota, you need to also order the little black cover that goes over the mounting bolt at the bottom of the arm. The cover on the '12 and newer years does not fit the new arm you are going to buy from the older Yaris. They sell that part separately for the older Yaris.

Also, the actual wiper part (the part with the rubber blade that connects to the arm) is not interchangeable with a '12 or newer "factory" blade. So you cannot just take your "factory" blade from your '12 or '13 Yaris and fit it to the older style arm. You need to go to an auto parts store and get the aftermarket blade refill (and they are the same size no matter what year of Yaris you drive).....

Get either a Triico Exact Fit; Size 12A "or" I have found out that you can go bigger and get even more coverage with the same brand in the size of: "14A" (and it fits beautifully). "Wow" what a difference in visibility while driving in the rain. It improves it even more than using the 12A-inch blade on the '07-'11 style arm and is 100% improved over the original set-up the car came with from the factory. And it does not void any warranty at all.

Hope this has helped those looking for the rear visibility solution while in the rain.
