5300 Miles road trip on 2014 Yaris SE and Wheel spacers...
Hi Everyone...
I just got back from the 5300 Miles road trip on 2015 Yaris SE and Wheel spacers... I started out from Portland Oregon and drove through SLC - Denver - Dallas - Houston... then San Antonio - El Paso - Phoenix - Las Vegas - Santa Ana - SF and back to Portland.... I just couldn't believe how smooth the drive was with my little yaris and I can feel it's better with cornering with 20mm bolt on H&R wheel spacers when going through hills or mountains... down in the South, I drove 75 - 80+ MPH and didn't have much road noise at all (maybe the roads are better then up in Oregon.... just thought I would share with you my great road trip experience.... :-) Last edited by shinhoseM; 08-13-2015 at 03:34 AM. |

Sweet! The Yaris makes a great car for a road trip! Comfortable and you can go 10 mph over the speed limit anywhere with great control.

Thanks... The first night when I drove out of Portland, I had a worry feeling about the wheel spacers that some people had a bad experience with them (wheels failed off or the bolt broke... ) turned out, it was so smooth even with 80+ MPH, no vibration at all..... after the 5300 miles, I just rotated the tires and re-torqued the spacers and still feel them tight.... H&R really makes the quality parts....

OP....2 questions: 1. Any effect on stability at 80 MPH or higher from the crosswinds on the 80 MPH portion of I-10 between just west of San Antonio to just east of El Paso ? 2. Any tire rub during u-turns or near u-turns in parking lots ? |

See my question #1 on post 5 of this thread . Acceptable.....perhaps. GREAT.....no (at least not in either of my Yari). However, that stretch of road (over 400 miles, IIRC) is the only stretch of road that comes to mind that would prompt me to disagree with you.

I rode my ST1100 over that stretch of road in 2000. Had to detour north east to Big Lake the winds were blowing 40 mph out of the south and I was heading east. I was tired of riding at a 45 degree angle to the winds which were gusty.
Yeah I never drove my Yaris under those conditions! But I DID drive 1400 miles from Minneapolis to Philly non stop in 14 hours without a problem. No wind. Do the math!

Havnt had a ticket since 2000 (on the same motorcycle trip) on the UP of Michigan. Shot doing 75 in a 55. Five minutes before that I was going 105. And was doing that all day before something told me to slow down.
However because I pulled over immediately when the cop passed me and I saw his brake lights go on in my rearview, he wrote it down to 66 in a 55. The deal in Michigan is cash on the spot or they impound the vehicle and take you to the judge. Fine was $85 and I had four twenties which the cop took. My cousins husband in Minneapolis that night said I just paid for the cops fireworks that day. (it was July 2nd)

That is insane. You have me beat. The longest I ever remember driving 'without stopping' (have to stop for gas of course) was from a little town in Alabama (can't remember the name) to Brandon, CT (via Carlisle, PA and Danbury, CT). It was between 1000 and 1100 miles (at a lower rate of speed ).

@ nookandcrannycar, between San Antonio to El Paso, there were crosswinds that I had to slow down under 80 or even 70 at some point since I can feel the shake from the winds, but then I can just speed up again when I didn't feel the shake after that....
I also didn't feel any tire rub during u-turns or near u-turns in parking lots, it was just smooth as normal.... also I don't know if I'm right or wrong about this, but with the 20mm spacers, the wheels come out a little more and that could give a bit room for the air to escape outside, thus, I didn't feel much road noise or air noise in the cabin, (compare to when I didn't have the spacers on), this could just be my imagination, but that what it feels like, the more quite in the cabin during the trip... And sure the spacers really make the car look nicer, it doesn't look weak like it come from stock... :-) |
