When is "empty" empty?

How long do you guys find you can go *after* the little fuel gauge starts 'blinking" alarmingly? That always scares me into hitting the first gas station I see (at which point it usually takes 10 gallons), but I've considered driving around with a gas canister to determine just how quickly I DO have to find a place to refuel once that starts happening. Anyone know?

Do not run your tank dry. You can damage the fuel pump or other systems. This topic has been cover before. You may want to try "search" for related info.

I guess it varies according to your driving style and if you drive more around town or on the highway you'll end up empty in more or less miles. For me, it takes me maybe about 300 miles or a bit more, but I've only let it get it blinking once, otherwise, I always fill it up once I reach 2 bars, which is around 280 miles for me. I read somewhere that it's not good to wait too long to fill up your tank.

Once it starts blinking, I've used about 10 gallons; that's how I'm calculating my mileage.

I seem to recall reading in the owners manual that when it first starts blinking you have 1.6 gals left when it blinks faster you are at 1.1. So if you know your avg MPG that's how far you can drive before you hit fumes. But like everyone else has said - don't wait that long. (I fill up when it starts blinking fast because I am never that far from a gas station)

This is the wise move for some of the reasons outlined. Also, who cannot always guarantee you know for how long it has actually been blinking. There have been a few times over the years I've been running this car when I see it blinking and go "Oh shit, when did that start!"

When I first got the car I would tempt fate and see how far it would go. No more. At some point during the second last bar I will fill up.

The myth that the gas at the bottom of your tank is more contaminated than the rest of the tank is just that...a myth!

Gas in your tank slushes around quite a bit when you drive, and any contaminates on the bottom (which are few) get caught in the fuel filter. And even that is minimal, which is why fuel line filters are no loner the norm, but internal filters within the tank are the standard. There just isn't that much crap floating around in the gas that is being sold today...

It is an interesting question. Would be good to know for long trips.
I am one of those persons that doesn't like having less than half a tank
when temps are as cold as they are in Wisconsin right now. Perhaps
it's the thought of being stuck in a huge traffic jam due to some accident
or something where you didn't want to be on fumes before hitting the next
gas station.

When I used to drive my old Toyota Echo with the Scangauge II, the fuel light would light up around 100km left till empty. When its around 100km left, the fuel light goes on n off. Also I found out that when there's about 80km till empty the fuel light will stay on (even on steep hill).

So from my experience when the fuel light turn on, you pretty much have about 100-120km to empty. I've driven to as low as 10km till empty with the scangaugeII.

Then you have to "empty" out your wallet and pay for a tow to the nearest garage, a new fuel pump and a full tank of gas.

good call, average is 30-35 miles left when the gauge starts to blink. but everyone is right, dont run it until you're dry, plus you run moree gas when it's on low, so i recommend refilling it at 3 bars, but if it's blinking and u have no wallet and is late to work or something...yea you got a few to go but dont put yourself in that situation, you'll regret not pumping gas when you're laying there watching the game and eating

I don't wait for the last bar. I usually stop by a shell or chevron when I am around the quarter tank mark. Usually 345miles or so.
