That bug me about the Yaris...

Three cupholders available to the driver, but none where I want them (to the front and right)... The interior light that comes on to illuminate the interior as I'm gathering up my purse, swigging the last of my drink, or blowing my nose before leaving my car; am sure the neighbors enjoy the "light show"...

And now this: placed my credit card on the passenger seat at a drive-through; down the seat it slid, disappearing in between the seat and back, but not coming out the other side because it's sealed in with fabric, necessitating my digging around in there for it; this NEVER happened before.

Then there's the fact that Yaris is both tall AND light, making it something of a windsail on gusty days, and can't drive with windows down; it "vibrates"...

Just little "design flaws" I didn't experience with the Suzuki Swift and am suprised to find in the Yaris. As for the hatchback, I find it so inconvenient to use that I've taken to just throwing my groceries in the back seat... I might as well have bought a sedan... And, even with the most fastitidious driving habits, I still average just 36 mpg highway... Two fewer than Swift.

I know this is supposed to be the Yaris fan club, but anyone else find the overall design of this car disappointing and "unremarkable"???

Oh, and those little flip-down handles above the doors; what are THOSE about??? To hang onto in a roll? For hanging clothes on (in the back seat only, of course), you have to actually reach in with one hand to hold it down while putting the hanger on it with the other, squishing yourself in if it's a 3-door. The outside is cute; inside, a disaster...

Sounds as though you bought yourself the wrong car. I think the Yaris is a great little car for the price. Perhaps you need to trade it for a car you like better.

Some people can find anything to complain about, I swear...

Most folks I know enjoy the auto dome light feature, myself included. If it bothers you that much you can always just turn the dome light off, and switch it on manually when needed.

And now this: placed my credit card on the passenger seat at a drive-through; down the seat it slid, disappearing in between the seat and back, but not coming out the other side because it's sealed in with fabric, necessitating my digging around in there for it; this NEVER happened before.
You have the center console's flat and vertical pockets for that, or the upper driver's glove box, or the left side console pocket, or the driver's door pocket for things like that. You put the card in the one place that could have caused you trouble, then blame the car for it.

Then there's the fact that Yaris is both tall AND light, making it something of a windsail on gusty days
This is true of any car with a similar design. It is not unique to the Yaris.

and can't drive with windows down
I do not know what you mean here as I drive with the windows down for months each year.

it "vibrates"...
I'll give you this one. It is a nuisance, However, opening and closing various compartments always used to make the rattling stop for me, and now that I've added in the pre-cut neoprene pad kit it's a rare day when I hear a rattle.

Just little "design flaws" I didn't experience with the Suzuki Swift and am suprised to find in the Yaris. As for the hatchback, I find it so inconvenient to use that I've taken to just throwing my groceries in the back seat... I might as well have bought a sedan... The way you go on and on and on about that Swift the less I understand how you ended up a Yaris owner. If the Swift was all that you'd still be driving one. Additionally, as has already been pointed out your mileage will likely improve now that you've discovered the Drive gear (It is still hard not to snicker when I think about that...).

I know this is supposed to be the Yaris fan club, but anyone else find the overall design of this car disappointing and "unremarkable"???
Not at all. Actually, for being an econocar I am pleasantly surprised at all it offers. This is by far the most utilitarian vehicle I have ever owned, handling carpoolers and their snowboard/ski gear, or mountain bikes, or hundreds of pounds of e-cycling goods or landscaping materials (try any of that with a Swift - lol), while simultaneously granting me mid-high 40's MPG year round despite climbing a mountain 5-7 days per week and parking just about anywhere I want to...

As with so many young people today I do not understand where your venom comes from, or why you are so hard to please, or even why you think the world has a responsibility to do so. Out of over 50 vehicles on the American market this model year you chose the Yaris. If you are going to be dissatisfied with anyone in all this it should be yourself, for what you perceive as a poor vehicle purchase decision on your part.

seriously not I loved the design of the yaris and that is what I fell for....
My mate has a done up swift and I dont like driving it. He bought it from the dealer already all done up with body kit, lowered, exhaust and the works.... I love driving my yaris anytime....

In fact, when he drove my yaris, he said I have a better acceleration that the swift even when they are the same engine capacity..
YARIS FTW!!!

Every car has it's perks. There are things I like better with my wife's 2008 CR-V, however, her car cost almost $10,000 than the Yaris. Dollar for dollar I feel that the Yaris is the best car on the market.

Sorry, but I can't believe these posts are still being made. Why did you get the Yaris? Why did you sell your Swift? Do you find minute details to complain about in most other things as well? Everybody has a right to voice their opinions, but this seems like a bit of overkill... indeed.

Every car I've had (or that my family has had) came with those handles, and I'm not talking only Toyota or asian cars, my Jetta also had them. I've never had to use them but I'm sure they put them there for a reason, so it's not a "yaris thing".

I understand you're frustrated with this car, but you can't keep complaining about it like this when it's your fault you didn't do the proper research when buying it. I hated the Jetta I had and found several little "defects" in it, but I didn't go to the VW enthusiast forum and start bashing it, I just traded it in for my Yaris .

Lol i never got why there is a handle above the drivers side door. Its like the handle factory overproduced them so they gave toyota a discount if they bought them all. And toyota was like darn what are we going to do with all these handles. I know lets put one on the drivers side too!

It's sort of funny because I haven't experienced one single issue that you have presented. I am glad to see that you have found "D" though...36mpg sounds pretty damn good to me...especially if you are in "D3."

The light that comes on is called a courtesy light. Comes on when you unlock the car to see if there are any bad guys hiding inside to murder you and also comes on when you are ready to exit the car to make these easier to see when its dark. Its a feature that is usually on luxury cars.

Also the cup holders above your knees make it so you dont accidentally knock them over and dont have to be constantly bending down to reach taking your eyes off the road. Also since they are infront of the vents now when its on a hot day and you have a cold drink. The cold ac when turned on will keep your drink colder. Or its a cold day and you have a hot drink like a coffe or hot chocolate it will keep your hot drink hotter longer. Pretty ingeniouse if you think about it. I woudlnt be surprised if you start seeing other car manufactures designing thier cup holders on new cars in the same spot. I mean if you really wanetd to you could take some foam and cut it to the shap of the lower bin and cut a hole in it the size of a cup. And whala you have your lower cup holder as well. Could even fiberglass it and paint it to match the interior so it looks oem.

Just wish mine weren't in the shop so dam much. My catalytic converter is being replaced, but now the battery is causing issues and the dealer is saying it's a "wear item". Keep in mind the sticker says the battery was manufactured not two years ago...

Why the heck is your catalitic converter being replaced. If your cat is bad that means your vehicle had a missfire dumping unburned fuel into the catalitic converter. If that happend you would have a blinking check engine light and you neglected to bring the vehicle into the shop driving it while the vehicle was shaking missfire with a flashing engine light.

If that didnt happen theres no reason your catalitic converter went bad. They should last atleast 200k. Either way our cars at maint free till 100k. So no reason why you should have a missfire the plugs and coils should last that long. So someone is pulling your chain.

Also all dealer batterys are crap. Especially on economy cars they use the economy battery. They only last you 2-3 years. If you want a good battery purchase a interstate battery that should last you 4-5 years.

I use the driver side handle from time to time. The handles are there to help get in for some people. I've hung a few clothing articles in the rear too. hehe.

I can agree about the cupholders and wind issues. Then again, I never expected this car to be remarkable and therefore I'm not let down that it isn't remarkable.

2 things to remember:
1) you get what you pay for- the Yaris is one of the cheapest cars available in the country

2) it's a Yaris forum- when you start threads about negative aspects of the Yaris you are going to get flamed, often unfairly, but it's gonna happen

True, Tuck, but I don't believe these design flaws are a matter of "economy"; for instance, fewer (but better placed) cup holders would've costed LESS... Inserting two little stable loops vs. four flippable handles would've cost less; certainly omitting the MP3 jack would've cost less... The Suzuki Swift was a cheap econobox, yet you could open the windows without it "drumming" (and what's with the little side vents - that don't open -in the front windows; surely it would've saved money to skip those???). It's just bad design, alas... Still, it's the best of what's out there today; sadly, that's not saying much.

Problem is, not even Suzuki makes anything like the Swift anymore. Even a stripped SX4 is going to cost more than the Yaris and get worse Mpg than you do now.
My Sidekick and XL-7 were good vehicles for the money, but they had their flaws too. When my commute went from 12 miles/day to 124 miles/day, I had to consider retiring the larger vehicle, which even at 165K still had plenty of life in it.

You can buy an aftermarket cup holder and some decent suspension components to make the Yaris better. Can you afford to trade it in against a Mini Clubman?

Also consider that crash safety of your Yaris is considerably better than the Swift was, even though the vehicle is not noticeably larger or heavier. For me, a few interior quirks that I can change or live with is a small discomfort in exchange for having a reasonably strong and efficient commuter.
