These are purported to get amazing gas mileage (up to 90 mpg), but isn't it likely that, should they come to this country, U.S. gas emissions standards will, as with the Smart Twofer, greatly reduce mpg capability? The Smart gets 60 mpg in Europe, but only 40 here (as I understand it) for that reason.

I realize this is a Yaris forum, but what do we know about these cars; anyone?

MotorTrend just did a one page review on this car and in the box where it said "coming to the US" it said "Never" Now I've read on IQ sites this car should be getting around 50mpg, but have read no confirmation on this. The car was released a month ago in Europe and Japan-but to answer your question-I don't think it is so much the emission components so much as added weight from safety and crash requirements in the US. The Smart ForTwo only gets 60+ mpg with the diesel which is available everywhere but here of course.

no offense, but i sincerely hope that it does not share our powerplant. it's a little archaic. i want to see a 1.4L D4D in it!

I don't think Toyota announced the engine specification for the USDM version yet? Europe gets tiny engines, but I seriously doubt Toyota USA's market research is gonna agree with that...

As for the OP's question of the Smart's mileage, the difference may just be due to the fact that US gallons and Imperial (UK/Canadian) gallons are not the same, so their cars can seem to have better mileage.

I love the look of the IQ, its going to be sold as a scion in the states if I recall correctly or is going to be....

and the engine i believe is a 1.3 diesel but will be offered with a 1.5l gasoline engine as well. its been a few months since i read the article.

I saw an IQ today on the roads. Here in Belgium it has a 1.4 D4D, also 1.0 and I think there will also be a 1.3

One of the major reasons that the MPG is so much lower for America is because they keep throwing in bigger motors for us that burns more gas. The extra weight from the safety standards only effects MPG by a few. I am hoping they bring the 2012 Yaris with the 1.3 L and CVTi to the United States as an option. I owned a 2000 Honda Civic with CVT transmission and it had more than enough power.

The second problem is that if they build a car that gets super gas mileage compared to the other models it might cannibalize the sales of certain models. Just about all car manufacturers target a certain number of sales per year of each model, and they wouldn't want people to stop buying the Corolla or Prius because the Yaris gets better MPG.

I am very excited about the iQ. Its supposed to arrive in canada this year. I'll be buying this car for sure. And toss a turbokit on it.

Its release in the States has been delayed until beginning of Summer. Crap! Also it's going to be getting a 1.3 gasoline engine with the CVT only in the US. Hope by the actual release they will offer the 1.0 and the MT. I sat in it at the LA Auto Show and I liked it. But need to know how it drives and what actual mpg it gets. We are going to be getting a lot of small cars in the next few years.
