I'll get the lights first, then deal with the wiring after
I'm confident it's not a difficult task, and the plugs that Kenbow's Vitz site supplies could make things a lot easier.

Well...how long the lights will arrive to Canada and how much i the total import taxes, shipping and tariff for each pair?
bigsky2
09-01-2006, 04:37 AM
Linkseal,
riceboy has stated that delivery will take about 1-3 weeks.
If it is being shipped direct from Japan, I suspect it will take about 1 two 2 weeks to urban areas in Canada as it is being sent via airmail.
As for duties/taxes, I am pretty sure that there will be at least GST 6% charged by Canada Customs, and any applicable provincial sales tax PST or HST depending on which province it is being sent to.
There may be duties or excise tax depending on how the lights are classified and which HS code they are cleared under.

I'm not sure what the import taxes/duties/tariff are going to be... I'll find out once I get mine in the mail... Shipping is included in the purchase price.
From my experience, you will be paying GST 6%, PST 7% (in Ontario), and then 5% admin charge, which comes to roughly 20% if they charge you.
Per Revenue Canada, they will charge tax even on GIFTS that are over $60 declare value. So it would be nice if they can label the light at a lower price and maybe mark it as USED PARTS to lower the chance of being taxed, but I think that will effect the insurance? :frown:
riceboy
09-01-2006, 11:07 AM
Yeah I asked about marking the parts used, but they advised me that it would affect the insurance because the value would be understated...

C'mon #10 - step up to the plate.
Japanparts.com is selling these lights for $350 + shipping ($39 to Toronto). So we're saving $39 right off!
Violin
09-01-2006, 02:15 PM
Japanparts.com also adds a 'surcharge' that you don't see until well into the ordering process - at least for credit card purchases they do.

oh really! What kind of surcharge we're talking about? Coz I'm about to order the Vitz front badge and the console box from them...
Violin
09-01-2006, 04:09 PM
It was about $10 (US) on my $142 order. For the $330 lights I want, the surcharge would be about $20. I guess it is based upon the credit card merchant charge?
You get a chance to review all charges before placing your order.
At any rate, they were great to deal with. My package made it to me in two days from Japan. I couldn't believe it.

hmm... so they charge you on the Credit card/paypal charge, which is 3% I read somewhere on the website I think. Thanks for the advise!

Well if this group buy doesn't go through, I'll be checking out japanparts.com if the local tuner shops charge too much.
Riceboy, what's the status of the group buy if there are only 9 buyers?
bigsky2
09-01-2006, 05:51 PM
Another note regarding Canada customs:
If the package is handled by Canada Customs Border Services Agency upon entry to Canada, and CBSA decides to charge you taxes and duties, you must pay a minimum $5.00 handling charge. This only occurs when the package is handled by CBSA and is then delivered to you via Canada Post.
Should the package be delivered by Purolator, which depends on how the shipper designates the importance of the parcel, and if taxes/duties are charged, you will probably be paying a brokerage charge since it is now being cleared by Purolator.
Purolator handles time sensitive parcels from Canada Post, so depending on how the shipper sent the item, it may be delivered to you via Canada Post or Purolator.
In terms of taxes, it will consist of the following:
GST 6%
PST or HST, varies depending on your location
Duties (Possible, depending on how the lights are classified and which HS code it is classified under)
Excise Tax (Unlikely in my experience, only items like cigarettes get excise taxed)
In terms of insurance/value declaration, it is always best to declare the full purchase value of the goods. If the parcel gets damaged or lost, you are entitled to the full value that was declared if you submit a claim.
Hope this helps!

Hey guys,
Sorry for the late response.. was pretty busy at work today... Anyhow... I'm waiting to hear back from the supplier about the GB, but I've stressed that I have 7 confirmed buyers. So I'll know more a little later this evening.
Jfoofoo - If you want in let me know, we can accomodate as we have one buyer leaving... I know that you might want to pick up the hid's... but consider that w/ a gb you're getting a group discount. There'll be more in the future, but depending on the level of participants it may or may not go through....
 YamilR  - Shame on you...
1. You never responded to my PM's
2. In the yarisowners forum you said "Well guys my Yaris bit the dust yesterday, good thing we have the lemon law in Fl. A piston rod came out flying thru the fender, but Im waiting for a new one", so as far as I'm concerned one's on the way so you should stick to your word.
I'm still waiting to hear back from pinstarz and teruyume... I'm going to send off another reminder pm/email a little later.. In the meantime thanks to those who have paid, and please be patient as I finalize this GB.

Some inform on how to swap the stock taillight to JDM RS taillight (for those who can read Japanese), pretty good as it points out what wire is what, at least for the JDM vehicles.

Great news!!! the supplier got back to me and said that since a large portion has already been confirmed that he'll honor the buy... he said that normally he'd either cancel it or up the pricing, but that he's interested in hooking us up for the potential business down the line... I told them that it's very much appreciated and advised that I should be sending them payment by tomorrow evening.
Why tomorrow?
Well I just rcv'd email from teruyume and he's advised me that I should be receiving payment by tomorrow 09/07/06.. Pinstarz hasn't replied to pm's, so I'll be extending the wait for her too.
Again, thanks for everyone's patience in this matter, and I promise that it'll be worth the wait!!!!
Oh and if anyone else wants to get in, by all means feel free to add your name to the list and send payment by tomorrow.

How are we (or you) going to do the "transplant" ?
Are we splicing wires as per those instructions, or are we going to find some harness connector?
Cool, thanks for the updating riceboy =D

If the vendor could lay their hands on that connector, we could all surely use one.
530 yen = $4.57 US.
Can anyone speak Japanese well enough to contact Kenbow (or whoever maintains that site) and find out how we could get those connectors?
Can anyone offer at least a rough translation? http://www.k4.dion.ne.jp/~vitz/RStail.htm

Actually one thing I can see from that page is that the LED taillight doesn't have the reflective plate, which might be required for North America regulation? So we might have to find some place to buy it and stick it on.

Actually we might be able to get riceboy to talk to his source to see if they can iinclude the plug for us as well! Part number will be "82824-52050" I assume? But again, this is the body side plug, so it will be another operation if you are to change back to the stock taillight afterward.
bigsky2
09-06-2006, 08:24 PM
That's an idea
riceboy, what's your supplier say about including any sort of harness or plug for installation into a non JDM body side plug?
I don't mind modifying the bode side plug/wire in order to accomodate the JDM tail light, only if we can get ours hands on the body side plug for the JDM tail light. That way, we can safely cut the body side plug and crimp the body side wires to the connecting plug for the JDM tails, and then connect the two plugs accordingly. It's a much more secure fit than crimping the body side wires DIRECTLY to the JDM plug.
Seeing has how we probably won't revert back to the old CDM/USDM tail light, a little modification won't hurt.

Has anyone looked to see if our wiring has the same color scheme as the chart?
Bablefish translation:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1103/rjenkie/translatedLarge.jpg
The one thing to keep in mind, is that in NA, our chassis is NCP91, which is the RS classification in Japan...
But the body side plug is still not correct, as we are using non JDM RS taillight even though ours is NA RS. Also, we don't have the reflectors on our bumper as in the JDM RS, which we might need to find places to stick some aftermarket ones on! haha

I wonder if we could get Hyde to take a photo of his connection.

Ok so here's the scoop.. they don't know whether or not we need 1 or 2 connectors.. I'm assuming two because there are two tail lamps... the price for 2 will be $11USD... they will be shipped out with the tail lamps. I know it may be a lot to ask, but if everyone can transfer funds by tomorrow than I can transfer money, and the order will be done, done, done!
So same deal as before please send the $11USD via albert.wong@sympatico.ca to paypal, if paying in CAD please send $13CAD via email money transfer. If you're not interested in the connector, please let me know!
Thanks,

1-3 weeks... 1 week is a little optimistic.. I think it'll drop in the 2-3 week range.. and I don't think there will be any difference from West Coast/East Coast locations.. or at least I hope not... since I'm in the East!

Why the 1 week difference? It's just 4 hrs flight in between.
This is dependent on a few things:
- If the package is ALL AIR service, then it should be delivered to Eastern Canada within 7-10 working days (pretty much 1-2 calendar weeks)
- If the package is a combination of AIR/GROUND service, then it will be aired to Vancouver and then put on rail or truck for Eastbound transport (this will could take 3 calendar weeks)
- If the package is sent using Japan's national postal service/company, it will be handed off to Canada post.
I'm not sure how the lights will be shipped so I'm just guessing.
We also have to consider whether the lights will be handed off to Canada Post to handle, or if it will be sub carriered by another courier company.

There's lots of APO and FPO in Japan, so there are LOTS of mail items going to the US - not surprised you got your package so fast.

Did you pull back the gasket slightly to see if there was a plug on the light, and a wire harness connected to it that may be hidden?

Imagine my surprise to get home, check yarisworld.com and see that 3 pages have been added to this thread. Right now I'm in the process of getting everything straightened out as I was under the impression that we would be receiving complete assemblies. As soon as I have more information I will update everyone. Please feel free to PM if you have any further questions or concerns.

Has anyone given any thought to reflectors to make up for the loss of the built-in reflectors in the stock tails?
I'm thinking that the mini cooper fender arch reflectors for the side and 4 or six small reflectors along the top of the hatch (above the window) would look best. Perhaps a couple of ~1"x4" next to the license plate?

Those are not just reflector. They are reflector housing.
So if you going to use it, you need to drill a hole on your bumper.

Even if they mount with posts (which is likely), I could cut them off and affix with adhesive.
My concern is that if someone plows into my parked car and leaves, an alert insurance inspector may deny the claim if I don't have reflectors.

 I finally got a reply from japanparts.com about there taillight assy. this was their response...
Thank you for your inquiry.
Actually our business style is when we receive order form from the customer,
we would order the parts to manufactured company.
In other words, we do not have any parts in our office.
So we can not confirm whether JDM tail lamp assy is included.
Sorry about it.
Just posting for anyone that may be curious.
actually i did, but they may take some time to answer. I thought I'd check to see if anyone here new

Hey Everyone,
Sorry for the delay, I know its taken some time but I've got some answers. Unfortunately the supplier never clarified that the wiring harnesses would not come included with the assemblies.
The standard JDM tails will come with bulbs/bulb holders, some orders have been shipped out and tracking numbers have been sent out, more tracking numbers to follow....
The wiring harnesses for the JDM tails will run 45.00USD for the set, I'm thinking that perhaps we should wait until we receive the lights to see what can be worked out before spending the extra $$$'s.

Riceboy,
So what about our previous payment for "connectors" ?
Will we still be getting them with the lights?
So......What are the tracking #s for anyways??

For you to track the status of your lights, when they've left the origin country, when they arrive in Canada, when it's in the sortation facility, when it's out for delivery, etc.
I got mine! WOO!
EDIT: I got my tracking numbers. Small woo.

I got them with mine - see the photos - just nothing to connect them to.
If all else fails, I may make something on my own.
The connector for the LED's is similar to a connector for a computer fan - that could be modified and secured. The bulb holders are very close to my present stop/tail holder, a slight trimming would probably get this to work. I could order four through my dealer. I'm not sure if there is an amber wedge style bulb that would fit through the hole though. Connectors for the wiring could be a computer item as well.
I'd still like the stock item though, even if it means waiting.

If someone could take a close-up photo of the bulb/bulb holders with a clear view of the wiring, it would help me greatly if I have to make my own.

Yeah, I agree, Hyde told me it only took less than 30 mins to modify the USDM plug to fit the JDM LED tailight, Basically just Cut and Paste...Same process as doing the JDM Honda Fit LED tailight...

Based upon this, I don't really see how the wiring harness will be seperate from the bulb holders. You guys might be wise to hold off on ordering anything else, especially looking at the photos of RoninMax's lights.

Trace at www.canadapost.ca guys.
It will give you results. Purolator may or may not be the carrier delivering this to you. Chances are you will get it delivered by Canada Post because there will be at least taxes (GST) payable on the lights.
Mine are already in Vancouver as of Sept 30 - just waiting for customs to clear it and I think I should have them by Wed Oct 3.
ok, my shipment is "International shipment has left the origin country and is en route to Canada".
However, I got two tracking number? Are they shipping the two (LH and RH) lights seperately?
So what other fee do we have to pay when they arrive at my door?
bigsky2
10-01-2006, 04:06 PM
At the bare minimum, I think you will have to pay GST based on the declared value of the lights.
If Canada Customs determines that taxes are owing, then you will also have to pay a $8.00 handling fee to Canada Customs. This is sort of like the brokerage charge that FedEx and UPS charges when they clear a shipment on your behalf.
I'm not sure if Canada Post mail carriers carry cash/coins with them, so you may not be able to pay them up front when they try to deliver to you at your door (unless you have EXACT change).
So what will most likely happen is this:
- Canada Customs will assess the lights, and determine that taxes are owing
- Shipment is released from customs, and Canada Post delivers as usual
- If you are at home when the mail carrier tries to deliver it, he/she will ask for money based on what Canada Customs assessed
- If you are not home, they will leave you a delivery notification card
- If the package can't be delivered to you in person at your address, you will have to pick it up from the closest authorised Canada Post retailer in your neighbourhood. Of course you will have to pay your taxes (and duties if applicable) before they release the package to you.
cool thanks for the detail explaination :)

Me Too, I would expect they are seperate because package size and weight affects cost considerably...
Cheers

I think we have to cut the body side plug and connect ithe body side wires to the connector we received.
Just gotta figure out how to connect it properly using disconnects or pin contacts...
bigsky2
10-02-2006, 11:07 PM
Ok this is what you need to do.
1) Cut the body side plug
2) Refer to the transplant page here for wire colours and associated operations of each wire: http://www.k4.dion.ne.jp/~vitz/RStail.htm#
3a) Plug in your connector and map out where the LIGHT SIDE wires are located when you view the connnector from the open end
3b) Remove the connector and get ready for some wire stripping and connecting
4) Strip your body side wires appropriately, attach the exposed wire to FEMALE MOLEX TERMINALS. Crimp them tightly. Insert them into the connector we have received in the right places to match up what you mapped out in in Step 3a), and lock them in place. This is the new body side plug.
5) Connect your body side plug to the JDM Tail Light
6) Enjoy
FEMALE MOLEX TERMINALS can be located at any electronics store, and I will be buying all of them in Vancouver so none of you guys can get your JDM tails in your Yaris without me being the first one!

I believe the shop manual shows how to release the pins from the connector - but I may be wrong. That would beat cutting the wires.

That would be an excellent alternative.
I'll start browing through the shop manual for such instructions if they exist..
