I have been lurking here for a few months and plan on buying a Yaris as soon as my current beater dies. I have been checking prices for many months and used sedan prices are thousands less than hatchbacks...what gives??

I have a sedan and I love it. I think some people prefer buying a LB for its utility... but, mine is a commuter and a sedan is a perfect fit!

When I bought my sedan, it was more expensive than the LB's...

Based solely on the 2009 sales in my area, I speculating that there is a bigger supply of used sedans than Liftbacks. By 5/31/2009 you could'nt find a new one in the Bay Area. I went to Nevada 5/2/09 just to find one with factory options. A Liftback Yaris is a well hunted quarry.

The sedan's just don't stand out like the LB's do.
And now with the 5 door LB on our shores, fuggedaboudit!

Around here the lb is cheaper and the supply is much larger well actually the demand is much smaller. My local dealership has 4 new 2009 LBs but only one new Sedan which is a 2008 and a manual and cost $1200 more than the most expensive LB which is an automatic.

In this area people don't like LBs though. In fact most LB drivers get them because they have the lowest sticker price.

*They also have 1 used 2007 manual sedan with 40k miles and 1 used 2008 automatic lb with 20k miles and the lb is $1000 more.*

Dunno about that.
Here on LI, I'm seeing almost all Yari on the road are LB's. I always try to catch them so they see my YW decals...

LB tend to be lower priced. My son bought the sedan and paid a little more than I did for the LB.

you just dont notice the sedans because they blend in to the sea of blandness that is the four door sedan. hopefully, for the next generation yaris, they will drop the sedan, or give it a new name...like...the Bleh.
just kidding...kind of.

I assure that the typical Long Islander is very different from the typical Delmarvan. I don't doubt that in LI hatches are in demand but around here hatches of any kind just aren't well liked. When I spend time in New England/New York all I see is LBs but when I am in the Mid Atlantic the very few Yaris I see are 80% sedans.

In my area, the base LB is cheaper than the base Sedan. The LB is $13,010.00 and the Sedan is $13,770.00

One other thing I'll add to the post. If you're 6' 5'" like me, the doors on the four door, in either Sedan or the Liftback version are a tad bit too narrow to get "into" and "out of."

The four door models were scratched off the list as soon as I saw them. I can articulate myself into the back seat of the 3 door, but its not something I'd not want to do several times a day.

I believe Echo was referring to the disrespectful person who was bashing the Yaris sedan, but does not own a Yaris, and drive a Corolla (which is a sedan). Talk about fail (not you b)...

Ok,

Seeing as my post was deleted, i'll try again. The topic is quite clearly "why are sedans so much cheaper".

Stock sedans are not as good looking as the stock HB (my opinion and many others too).

Toyota sells less Yaris sedans than HB.

So for Toyota to move on the sedan stock they sell them cheaper.

It's a simple supply and demand issue. There are more in supply than demand. So the price is moved down to sell them.

Hopefully this is classified as on topic and the mods are respectful enough to leave my view posted.

SEDANS RULE!

Actually, for many people, the sedan makes more sense, but for others, the lift back is the way to go.

I like the sedan for its better security for cargo, and I like the looks of it better than I like the looks of the LBs. Looks are purely a matter of personal taste. There is no such thing as "right" or "wrong" on looks.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer a hatch back, looking back ever single car that i have owned has been a hatch back of some form. Another point is that i have never to this point needed an actual trunk.

when i bought my LB it was for 11900 for the base model.

also i think the dealers are jacking up the prices right now because there is a fad starting on a larger scale. The dealers are also in a slump for profit so they are trying to make up for it by ripping people off.

Im sure you can talk them down to getting one cheap.

I'm a fan of the sedan.

I haven't noticed that the sedans are cheaper. Wish they were!

Actually, the OP was speaking of asking prices for used ones in his area.

That's a funny comment coming from someone who drive's a sedan. Talk about blandness.........corolla, maybe they should call the yaris sedan a corolla, wait that would be an insult to the yaris. Just kidding, kind of.

i fully acknowledge the blandness of the corolla. i have a sedan out of necessity, but prefer hb's by far. i just dont see the point of the yaris sedan as they are currently priced. i get similar mileage, but ride in more comfort and quietness and still paid just under $15k.

to the topic, i see 5-6 sedans on the lot for every 1 hb. i assume they are more plentiful so would be the easier find on the used lot. they definitely seem a bit more upscale than the hb interior wise, so i can see why they cost more new.

You got the base model right? Does it have P/W?
My mom has an 06' Corolla with an auto and it moves pretty good. I bet your Corolla with the 5 speed has some decent pep to it.
Did you get the green one??

i had to add pw's myself (at a cost of only $362). total bs that to drive a stick w/ a 2009+ corolla you have to get either the base or the s model, but not the most popular model , the le. about as much sense as toyota finally offering the 5 door yaris hatch, but only in auto:thumbdown:

i figured you were poking fun at the green corolla color. have never seen one, but its an interesting color. i doubt my 5 speed is much faster than my 5 speed yaris hatch was, but its more fun because the shifting dynamics are much smoother.

No, seriously, I do like the green!
I saw one at the dealer, real sharp looking.
Do you get the DBW delay when you step on the gas like the Yaris has?

roxy1
07-18-2009, 06:45 PM
the corolla has more wiggle room for negotiation. plenty of folks are currently getting the base model at $14k (and even less) over at toyota nation and the le w/ power windows/locks still under 15k. definitely a buyers market for any car with the economy in the toilet.

Probably because you are trying to be forceful, like before, and don't realize it's all about personal taste and also regional. My local dealer has not had a Yaris on their lot in over 4 months. They have only got a few in all year long that a customer did not already order. For every 10 Yaris's that I see on the road, 9 of them are Sedan's and 1 a LB. But of course thats just in my region. Different regions are going to show different interest of style. Not for sure why it is that way in my region but one reason it might be is because people are used to driving big SUVs and trucks. The few people that are trading in their gas guzzlers for FE cars like the Yaris, are used to having 4 doors and more accessible room for kids or other junk they may carry around. But like I said, it's just a guess of why their are more in my area. There are tons of people that still drive SUVs and big trucks and that will probably never change. Probably close to half of all vehicles you see around here are trucks. From what I'm told about other regions is that you hardly ever see a truck or an SUV. I was talking to this guy that was here on business and he was so amazed at all of the trucks. But anyways....I think the results will be different in different parts of the world. Here the LB is about 3000 cheaper than a Sedan, on average.
