Since the initial GB was cosmetic, this next GB will be about performance!!! I've been able to secure a GB with Megan Racing on their unreleased Yaris header which will fit both the liftback and the sedan. The price will be $210USD via PayPal or $235CAD via Email money transfer. Pricing includes shipping direct to your door US/Canada. Each header comes with a no-hassle 1 year warranty.
We need a minimum order quantity of 10 pcs, and I think that we'll leave the GB open until November 1, 2006. Payments can be made to my paypal account, after the GB closes I will transfer funds and we should receive the parts by the 1st or 2nd week of December 2006.
-----===== UPDATE =====-----
Alright here's the news that I promised.. I know that we had a hard time getting to 10pcs.. however MR says that if we can put together a 20pcs GB that we can lower our cost to $190 USD via PayPal or $210 CAD via Email Money Transfer. Remember pricing includes shipping direct to your door US/Canada. Each header comes with a no-hassle 1 year warranty.
We need a minimum order quantity of 20 pcs, and we'll extend the GB open until Monday November 20, 2006. If we don't hit 20 we're stuck at the original price, but I think that we can make it cheaper for all of us!!
Any additional import taxes, duties, and brokerage fees where applicable, are the responsibility of the buyer.
***Upon request parts can be marked as replacement***

Good point. Any idea what this one does to the torque curve?
ItsMyDaily

4-1 ones usually will yield good top end gains, while little if no bottom end gains compared to a 4-2-1 design. should not loose power down low though.

My questions:
Being as thats only the prototype, how soon after the GB ends, will it be in my hands?
Are they using the stock cat / resonator / muffler for their testing, or do they also have a complete header back system?
What kinda of warranty will they provide?
Thanks RICE!

personally i'd wait for a dyno graph to see the actual curves compared to a stock dyno. I'd like to see if power is gained throughout the entire rpm range or if in some places(up top). Also woul;d be curious to see if power drops in certain places. The focus on yaris's should be to improve mid range power since these motors do not make high numbers in hp anyway.

In general, 4 cyl engines don't experience torque losses due to header alone... the only reason there should have been any torque loss was if something was installed incorrectly, there was a leak, or due to the intake. You probably won't see any real low end gains however, and high end gains will be minimal unless used in conjunction with a better flowing exhaust and intake. In short, header alone isn't going to net you much improvement, it's meant to be used as part of a well tuned intake and exhaust system.

Hey guys,
Just some answers to questions that I've been asked... MSRP hasn't been set on this unit as it's not on the market yet... but the guys at MR assured me that we're getting a really good deal.
As far as gains go there shouldn't be any loss in low, mid, or high end but there are no dyno numbers yet. They're anticipating that it will be 4-6 hp minimum and as others have said probably in the high end of the rpm band. With larger diameter tubing and equal length in the tubes things should really be opened up.
The product should be in our hands by the first week of December, the units should be arriving in California by the end of November. The warranty is one year and is a no-hassle warranty as stated by the MR guys.. they've basically advised that if there are any problems that they will troubleshoot and/or replace depending on the situation.
Everything used with the MR 4-1 Header is stock and they currently have a header installed and running on their project car, there are no plans for a mid-pipe as there are too many sensors and cats to work with. The only other planned add-on is an axle back exhaust which is still under development.
Other than that the following are answers to PM questions...
1) Will O2 Sensor's bolt right up?
Yes
2) Will the header include new gaskets?
New gasket and donut
3) Will it bolt up without additional modification?
No mod needed
4) Will they be C.A.R.B. certified?
Won't get carb certified, otherwise the price will go up double
5) Where will they be shipped from? The states or Canada?
Shipped from California, no pick up is allowed as MR is a distributor and doesn't do any retail from their offices

If there are dyno numbers before the GB closes, I might be interested. I don't want to lose any low end torque.

MR have advised that it will fit the 3/4/5 Door with no modification necessary. The prototype they have is fitted to their lb, but they haven't had a chance to run the Dyno yet. I've just been advised that if anyone is willing to run the dyno for them that they would offer that individual an additional reduction of $50USD on their purchase. They have tons of other projects on the go and just haven't had the time to get the testing done. Anyone interested?
They should give us free headers so we can test it out for them and tell them what we think and how much added boost we get!! Hehehe, we shouldnt have to pay them money so we can test their prototype product =P!!

I tried positioning it that way as well, unfortunately they don't feel the same. As it stands I look at it as a fantastic opportunity because we'll essentially have product before even some of the retailers.
Im in,hey riceboy, see if you can pull some strings and see if you can get the high flow cats to go with that.

That $210 price is insane... that is about how much you'll pay for Pacesetter headers for most four bangers, and Megan Racing is a far cry! See for yourself...

From that site:
Megan racing headers are made with T-304 stainless steel, Mandrel bent tubing, CNC Machined Flanges. Each set is tested and dynoed to make sure the fitment and performance meet our goal. Each header comes with 1 year warranty.
Oh really?
I'm still on the fence... but leaning.
riceboy
10-19-2006, 11:36 AM
No high flow cat or midpipe is planned for the time being because there are a ton of sensors and two cats within the midpipe. Depending on how things go with the header, they'll look at producing some other pieces. They've done the testing and fitment on these headers but as I said they haven't had a chance to dyno test them yet. They are projecting 4-6hp gains based on the fact that the everything will be equal length and the overall diameter has been enlarged... So I guess for now it stands as this....

10-19-2006, 11:20 PM
No prob bigsky and redglare.. there'll always be next time... dngz no dyno yet so there's no way of telling.. although with 4-1 headers its generally only an increase in the top end hp.... 03z33 I know what you're talking about... this is what they can do.. if you can wait I'm sure that there'll be more deals down the line.. I myself am still mod hungry so I know I'm paying premium prices.. but I want it now.... so too bad for me...

Alright riceboy, give me headers... woah that sounded suggestive.
got another question!! haha! let's say i get the headers with stock exhaust and they say its around 4-6 hp gain from the headers... if I get custom exhaust, will there still be a potential gain from these headers?? Like, if headers give 4-6 hp.. with stock exhaust, and without the headers but custom exhaust gives me extra 8-10... with both combined, will it be 12-16hp gain?? or will they combine and help each other out performance wise to have a gain of 15-18 hp??
LOL hope u understand!! Read it again and even confused myself a little... but yea.. I dunno how to explain it any better ><!
riceboy
10-20-2006, 01:27 AM
I'm not sure that the gains will help multiply any hp gains, but it should help with the overall performance.. whenever you tune a car you're always trying to eliminate the weakest link.. the headers are just one way of doing this.

Let's say this header does give you 6hp(up top), and if you put on an exhust aswell then you'll probably only get the hp that exhaust will add. For example tanabe dynoed with an additional 4-5hp or something like that. so you get 6hp fom the header, and then another 4hp from tanabe exhaust, but probably no more. The reason for this is because your cat(s) will still be in place. If someone comes out with a test pipe kind of thing for the yaris then you can get the full potential out of these mods.

arent test pipes illegal?? In import tuner, they tested out a test pipe and a high flow cat converter and there was only 1 hp difference..
riceboy
10-20-2006, 11:09 AM
test pipes are for off-road/track use only.... the headers should be fine... they aren't going to mess w/ the cats and we should be able to have them on w/o any problems.

chris no prob.. consider it done... violin.. this is what they advised me.. they told me that there's so much going on in the midpipe that they decided to pass on it.. at least for now.. i guess depending on how the headers go, perhaps they'll re-consider in the future...

Riceboy and I are trying to work something out with Megan Racing and Big Shot Dyno in Ohio. Things are still up in the air but assuming we can work something out, I will be driving to the dyno as soon as these things hit our doorsteps for a solid report on HP/torque gains (or losses! BOO). Big Shot does great work... I've seen a Mercedes C230 they tuned and that was awesome, plus they're the only authorized Saleen techs in the state. Go check them out.

I can pretty much guarantee at this point that we will have dyno results with the headers ON the car.
There is also a good chance that we won't have the results for the car w/o the headers. I'm gonna try to find a way around this, but it isn't looking good.
Question for the real gearheads on the boards... is it possible to install headers using only equipment you can bring in the car in twenty minutes? If you have to pick the engine to get at it then I am screwed. If not, I'll bring some cheese wedges so I can drive up on them and get the new headers in.

^ header install is an easy do it yourself. Swapped out the header on my S2K when I had it, although it may be a little harder on the Yaris considering your going doing it blind being that it's located in that small space behind the motor. It's simple bolt-off then bolt-on and go.

Wrap the header with what? A blanket?
Just kidding... where online can you get that wrap shit though? You're talking about the same wrap you'll see on CAI tubing sometimes, right?
riceboy
10-25-2006, 03:55 PM
Header wrap is supposed to keep the heat in and increase exhaust velocity and engine efficiency, as well as reducing under-hood temperature.
Chris07LB
10-25-2006, 07:18 PM
Soaking it in water first greatly helps the ease of install as well. Be sure you are wraping with the "folds" going in the right direction, and scrap the metal zip ties, for safety wire.
ItsMyDaily
10-25-2006, 08:12 PM
I'll never use header wrap myself. Have seen many that have used it only to end up with cracked headers.
riceboy
10-25-2006, 08:34 PM
Well its an option... I know that I'll probably run the headers as is.... but if you're worried about the heat.. you can wrap em'

Ceramic coating works better than header wrap and the reason they soak the stuff in water is so that you don't get fiberglass pieces all over yourself  It also helps to pour some talc powder on your arms to avoid the fiberglass itches

Yeah, I want to go forced induction a few years down the line, but if I'm dropping thousands on a kit, whats a $200 set of headers? I'll sell them to some 16 year old kid that just got his first car for 50 bucks, he'll be stoked.

I'm on the opposite end. I can afford it, but don't really need it right now. Plus I'd like to see what else the market comes out with. I'd bet we'll see a 4-2-1 design sometime soon.
ItsMyDaily,I dont think there would be much diffrence between a 4-1 and a 4-2-1 design, because the pipes are real short. The goal is to open up the exhaust, because I like to be able to get to my top speed faster when Im already going 75mph,but this design is still a major improvment over stock either way you look at it.BUY BUY BUY!!!

11-02-2006, 01:19 PM

- 4-1 (1 piece)
- Mandrel bent tubing
- CNC Machined Flanges.

The Honda Fit headers which just came out would be the applicable product to compare this one to, and they're $199. Shipping would be what, an extra $30? We're basically getting these for $160 + shipping at this point...

hey no sweat, it is a good deal!!!! , but if they ship via UPS us canuck's are screwed!!!..
I would buy them also, and I still might, but what do you people really expect to get from this car?? intake, headers, exhaust is maybe 10-12 hp gain; total! heck the superchargers are only adding 30-40 hp with the 3 mention add-ons...

I agree with the fun of modding and having that yaris with just a bit more HP then the others, but I doubt you'll ever see gains of 20hp with those three mods. Also anyone know what the tranny can handle?
20 seems so far away... anybody kno if xb/xa headers/intakes would fit?
Actually we will still get them the 1st or 2nd week of December,or maybe thats when they ship,Im to lazy read, its in this thread some where,1st page prob.So the longer its extended, the better chance of hittin 20 for the group buy.

i duuno wht yyou think but it looks pretty good... (mmuuch better that the MR)
This also has me concerned,MR says projected 4-6,when the WR headers look like atleast 14 extra ponys.I dont know what Im going to do,If MR increases there projection to 12-14,Ill stay onboard, but Im thinking hard about going with WR,maybe we could start a GB with them.I know we have all been waiting and trying real hard to get people on board, but the WR's look like they will produce twice as much HP as the MR headers, that a big diffrence,I think they might be worth the extra money.Any ideas on what we should do riceboy.I say contact MR and tell them the group could go some where else to get our headers, see what they say, tell them the 2 prices, and then tell them the HP diffrence.Maybe MR will knock off another $75.00

Nobody knows what the WR headers will cost yet in a GB format.

They said $350, but will knock down the price for a GB. I dont know if $300 is reasonable since they basically double the HP that MR claims and notice that they said that they had a little fittment problem, so imagine with no exhaust leaks

you also read that header was not totally bolted up, so it was like running a partially un-capped header, so those are not very acurate #'s... I want to see #'s with header fully bolted up on the stock exaust

If I have less than the 210 in my paypal, will it automatically take the rest from my bank account if I joined in on this GB? :x
Yes,if you have your bank account as a back-up wire transfer account. It will transfer it immediatly, and at no cost to you,I never keep money in paypal,It always getspaid threw my bank account,It will drain what ever money I have in there from a sale, then the rest from my bank.

Alright, I've got some great news!!!
Megan is going to honor the lower pricing eventhough we only managed to put together 14 buyers. The final payment will be $190 USD via PayPal or $210 CAD via Email Money Transfer. Please send to albert.wong@sympatico.ca as soon as possible. I will need to get your contact name, full address, and telephone number for shipping purposes. I've been advised that the shipment has been delayed by about 2 weeks, so we can expect the headers to arrive a couple weeks later than the initial promise date of the 1st or 2nd week of December. If you have any questions, please PM me.
THANKS TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS OF ANOTHER GREAT GB!!!
